THE WEEK-LONG SENATE DEBATE ON IMMIGRATION McCONNELL PROMISED AS PART OF THE BUDGET DEAL BEGINS TODAY!

Call Senators Feinstein and Harris starting today and tell them we need relief for Dreamers. Senators today will take up the nearly impossible task of finding the votes to pass a bill that protects younger illegal immigrants from deportation while improving border security and reforming the nation’s immigration policies.  There is no guarantee Senate lawmakers can pass any immigration reform bill, given the partisan differences, but Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, fulfilling a promise he made to both parties last month, plans to give lawmakers a shot at it.

Call Senators Feinstein and Harris starting today and put pressure on them to ensure we protect Dreamers.  Use this script to get started.

TRUMP’S INFRASTRUCTURE PLAN (SCAMMMMMM) LANDS TODAY and Republicans hope that passing it will ensure they keep the House this November.  The plan is expected to lean heavily on private investors to finance rebuilding our nation’s infrastructure. It won’t help smaller rural communities and communities of color with the repairs they need to their roads, bridges, transit systems, schools, affordable housing, water systems, and electric grids.  Learn more from this helpful explainerCall Senators Feinstein and Harris and Rep. Paul Cook and ask them to oppose the Trump infrastructure plan and support the #MillionsOfJobs principles.  Use these scripts.

FIRST NEW SOCAL FREEWAY THIS CENTURY COULD SPELL DISASTER FOR DESERT ENVIRONMENT:  The California Department of Transportation, in cooperation with a joint powers authority, will in June begin buying land to build a 63-mile high desert freeway connecting the Los Angeles County communities of Palmdale and Lancaster with the San Bernardino County communities of Victorville, Apple Valley and Adelanto. How much of the Mojave Desert terrain in the vicinity of the project would survive as it is today — fragile ecosystems interspersed with ranches and isolated communities far removed from the confines of city life — is an open question. Critics argue the project would induce sprawl, traffic congestion and air pollution. Developers, they say, want to build up the area for profit and not necessarily to reduce commute time.  See details in Los Angeles Times.

The San Bernardino County communities all lie in the 8th Congressional District of Representative Paul Cook.  Contact Rep. Cook to express your concerns about the potential effects of this project.

ACTION MEETING THIS TUESDAY Feb 6:  The next IMB Action Meeting will be Tuesday Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. in Joshua Tree.   REGISTER HERE.

  • Voter Registration Training: 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Team meetings 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Discussion: 7 p.m. to 8 p.m

CALL YOUR MoCs TO DEBUNK NUNES’ MEMO:  The #ReleaseTheMemo fake scandal: Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA… aka that guy who once recused himself from the Russia investigation after sneaking into the White House) has put together a now-public “memo” of talking points to shield Trump from accountability. This document is a fabricated political stunt to stop the Mueller investigation. Read this resource to learn about the memo (and Rep. Adam Schiff’s real memo), and use these scripts to call your MoCs. The memo turned out to be a big “nothing burger.”  According to Rep. Schiff, “Other sources of information are going to decide not to share with the FBI because they can’t rely on our committee not to be partisan in the handling of that information.”  Speculation continued on Sunday about whether Trump would try to fire Mueller or Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general overseeing the special counsel’s work.  Dick Durbin, the No 2 Democrat in the Senate, told CNN’s State of the Union doing so would “precipitate a constitutional crisis”.   Learn more here, then:

  • Call Senators Feinstein and Harris and ask them to denounce the memo as the fraud and distraction it is; use sample script hereThen, ask them to co-sponsor S. 1735 or S. 1741 to show their support for protecting Mueller and the investigation; use this script.
  • Call Rep. Paul Cook  and let him know that we recognize this stunt as extremely dangerous to the Republic (he is a “Republican,” after all) and that we expect him to defend the rule of law, our national security and our law enforcement agencies!  Sample script hereThen, ask Rep. Cook to co-sponsor H.R. 3771 to show support for protecting Mueller and the investigation; use this script.

TRUMP’S BILLIONAIRE INFRASTRUCTURE SCAM:  Trump’s infrastructure framework was leaked last week (read an explainer on it here). His plan is expected to lean heavily on private investors to finance rebuilding our nation’s infrastructure. It won’t help smaller rural communities and communities of color with the repairs they need to their roads, bridges, transit systems, schools, affordable housing, water systems, and electric grids.  Call Senators Feinstein and Harris and Rep. Paul Cook and ask them to oppose the Trump infrastructure plan and support the #MillionsOfJobs principles.  Use these scripts.

67 ENVIRONMENTAL RULES ON THE WAY OUT UNDER TRUMP:  The New York Times lists 67 environmental regulations that have been overturned or where rollbacks are in progress or in limbo by the Trump administration—a grim summary.  The IMB Environmental Issues Team asks us each to review the list, find the one that is most concerning to each of us, and contact the agency responsible or our members of Congress.  Scroll all the way down on the NYT web page to find details and links on the rules and their effects.

ADELANTO: ROBERTO IS RELEASED!  Roberto had his bail bond reduced and was released from Adelanto Detention Center, thanks to the efforts of many.  The IMB Immigration Team drove him to his new home on Tuesday. And fees have been raised for Jean’s case.  Read the details and see photos of Roberto on the IMB blogPlease help release more hunger strikers by donating to the Adelanto Bond Fund. Thank you!

COMING SOON TO A DESERT VISTA NEAR YOU:  Indivisible Morongo Basin members are on a mission to register a record number of district voters in time for the crucial California Primary on June 5 and, of course, the national midterm elections in November. The IMB Voter Registration Team is currently recruiting members to sign up voters at community events and key locations throughout the Morongo Basin. Sign up or inquire by sending a message to Jo Ann in the IMB comment box.  Here’s Jo Ann on the job at the Copper Mountain First Saturday Pancake Breakfast; read a post from Jo Ann on the IMB blog!

SAVE THE DATE:  The next IMB Action Meeting will be TUESDAY FEB. 6 at 6 pm in Joshua Tree.

URGENT FROM OUR IMMIGRATION TEAM:  Our IMB Immigration Issues Team sends us an urgent dispatch.  Roberto has been released from Adelanto Detention Center, but Jean is being shipped from center to center and in dire straits.  “While in AZ, he found out his bail bond had been cancelled and he proceeded to ask us to stop all efforts to prevent his deportation. He faces DEATH, friends, if he returns to Haiti. His mother died eight days after a beating intended for him – he was not at home when men showed up at his home so they beat up his mom. We could not not mobilize, hence my urgent appeal for legal fees money.”  PLEASE HELPSee the dispatch and contact us if you can help!

OUR CALIFORNIA DREAM HEROES STOOD STRONG.  LET’S THANK THEM.

The Dream Act fight isn’t over — but it gets a lot tougher from here. Sen. Schumer and the Democrats traded away a lot of their leverage, and Trump is in a much stronger position than he was last week. But Indivisible Groups are going to keep sticking with this fight and standing with immigrant youth at risk of deportation.  Thank you to all our members for all you’ve done so far, and let’s thank both of California’s Senators for standing with Dreamers.  Senator Kamala Harris has been a leader in the fight for Dreamers since day one, voting against the Continuing Resolution (CR) when it didn’t protect them.  Senator Dianne Feinstein — with a lot of persuasive pressure from Indivisible groups and others — also made the right call, and stuck with it.  The next CR runs out on Feb. 8.

  • Call Senators Feinstein and Harris and thank them for their courage and steadfastness in keeping their word and standing with the Dreamers when many other Democrats did not.  Use this script to tell them thank you.
  • How would the loss of Dreamers affect our District?  There are 2,300 total DACA recipients in the District, and 4,600 who are DACA eligible; the annual GDP loss in this District resulting from the removal of DACA workers would be $127,000,000.  (Source:  USCDornsifeCall Rep. Paul Cook and ask him how he can justify these destructive effects on his residents and our economy.  (Also: See here the effects in Senator Schumer’s state!)

REJECT THE REPUBLICAN ABORTION BAN:  Just one week ago the Trump Administration introduced new rules granting health care workers the license to discriminate against women seeking an abortion.  Now, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act would block access to abortion services after 20 weeks.  Already passed by the House, the bill will likely be brought to the Senate floor for a vote as early as Monday.  Call Senators Feinstein and Harris NOW and tell them to stand against this attack on women’s health.  Sample script here.

TAKE STEPS TO PREVENT TRUMP FROM FIRING MUELLER:  The media are now reporting what we’ve long suspected: Trump wants to fire Special Counsel Mueller, and has already tried to do so. His attorney prevented the firing, but that doesn’t mean that the independent investigation is safe. A smear campaign among Trump and the GOP continues to frame Mueller and his investigation as illegitimate, and Congress has so far failed to enact protections for the Special Counsel’s office.  Our elected officials need to speak out and make clear that firing Mueller would be a red line that Trump must not cross.   Learn more, then:

BEEN BLOCKED FROM REP. PAUL COOK’S FACEBOOK PAGE?  Rep. Cook’s new Social Media Guideline posted on his Facebook page blocks freedom of speech.  Have you been blocked from commenting on his Facebook page for civilly demanding answers or disagreeing with him?  A new Facebook group created by a blocked constituent takes issue and gives a voice to similarly blocked constituents protected by the First Amendment.  If this includes you, join on Facebook at “Congressman Paul Cook blocked me from his Facebook page!

WELCOME TO IMB’S NEW TABLING TEAM!  Indivisible Morongo Basin members are bringing the Indivisible message to the table in public places and community gatherings.  The IMB Table, essentially a pop-up information center on civic responsibility and how to actively participate in democracy, offers the public information on Indivisible Morongo Basin as a resource in the area to respond to the radical Republican legislation and the Trump agenda. Here’s a report from the scene at Joshua Tree Farmer’s Market!

THE YUCCA VALLEY WOMEN’S MARCH 2018 AND RECEPTION:  Six hundred marching in Bishop, 1200 in Palm Springs – women aren’t stopping in the California deserts!  Here in Yucca Valley Indivisibles made a strong showing at the 2018 Women’s March and hosted a reception following the rally; read our new report here.  And per the cover story in Time Magazine, the Women’s March is turning into a true political force, with a new strategy for 2018: “Power to the Polls”, a nationwide voter registration drive targeting first-timers in swing states ahead of the midterm.

FOLLOW STATE OF THE UNION WITH INDIVISIBLE:   Trump will wrap up a chaotic January by giving his first State of the Union tomorrow night at 6 pm PT. The theme of the speech is “Building a Safe, Strong, and Proud America.” He will likely highlight his infrastructure plan (catered to billionaires and corporations) and immigration framework (written by the White House’s chief nativist Stephen Miller). You can follow along with the National Indivisible Team on Twitter and Facebook for up-to-the-minute analysis all night!  The Democratic response will be delivered by Rep. Joe Kennedy, followed by a Spanish response by Virginia Delegate Elizabeth Guzman.

WOMEN’S MARCH ONE YEAR LATER – MORE COMMITED THAN EVER!   A year ago the hi-desert turned out in numbers that stunned locals for the first Women’s March in Yucca Valley.  This weekend the desert turned out again, with over 100 smiling resisters lining the Highway at Old Woman Springs – cold and wind notwithstanding!  It’s been an incredible year!  Thanks to the Morongo Basin Democratic Club for organizing this inspiring anniversary event and to everyone who contributed and turned out.   Enjoy images of the event on the IMB website courtesy Gayle A.

PROTECT THE DREAMERS AND END THE TRUMP SHUTDOWN!

364 days, 11 hours, and 59 minutes into the Trump Administration, the government shut down.

In the entire history of our country, the government has NEVER shut down when one party controlled the Congress and the White House. It’s called “governing,” and apparently the GOP government can’t do it.

How did we get here?

Trump launched an attack on Dreamers. In September, Trump announced he was unilaterally ending Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), a program that provides deportation relief and job permits for 800,000 young immigrants after an extensive (and expensive!) application and vetting process. When he rescinded DACA, Trump created a crisis that only his party could fix.

A week later, Democratic leaders Pelosi and Schumer met with Trump to strike a deal to fund the government until December, promising that Dreamers would be protected by that time. No deal was passed to protect Dreamers at that time and they kicked the can to January.

Last week, Trump and other Republicans blew up an existing bipartisan agreement to avert a shutdown, in service to their most racist ideas about America. This happened just one day after Trump said he would sign whatever agreement Congress sent him. Not once in the ongoing budget negotiations did Republicans put forward legislation that could pass both of the chambers of Congress… that they control! It’s clear that after months of negotiations to protect Dreamers, Democrats are working with a President that is negotiating in bad faith.

Immigrant youth have waited too long for a permanent solution to the crisis created by Trump’s vicious deportation agenda and terrible deal-making. 122 Dreamers lose their protection every day, and more than 16,000 have lost their DACAmented status since September. Dreamers’ lives shouldn’t be in limbo because Republicans can’t govern.

Republicans caused this shutdown. And it’s their responsibility to fix this mess by voting on bipartisan legislation — that we know will pass both chambers of Congress — to protect Dreamers and end the Trump Shutdown.

Week of January 14, 2018

HAPPY MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY!  Most government offices will be closed today.

WOMEN’S MARCH 2018!  Last year’s Women’s March in Yucca Valley was a seminal event for the Resistance in the Morongo Basin.  Let’s show that the people of the hi-desert continue to stand united against Trump’s agenda.   Spread the word and help boost turnout!  We’ll be joining hundreds of locations around the nation.   Everyone welcome.   Please keep signs positive.  Sponsored by the Morongo Basin Democratic Club.   Saturday Jan 20, 12-2 p.m.  Highway 62 and Old Woman Springs, Yucca Valley.

CONGRESS HAS FIVE DAYS TO PASS THE DREAM ACT:   Funding for the government runs out by the end of next week, on January 19.  With Republicans in control of Congress and the White House, it’s on them to put a bill on the floor that can become law.  It’s also on them to clean up the mess Trump made when he eliminated the DACA program back in September. 122 DACA recipients continue to lose their protections every single day.  The best way to reject Trump’s racism is to protect the people who he wants to deport.

It’s up to Democrats to make sure that Republicans do right by Dreamers. They must take a stand and refuse to vote in favor of any new funding bill that fails to protect Dreamers from deportation.  The time for hesitation is over.  Learn more, then:

DON’T LET TRUMP PUSH US INTO WAR WITH IRAN:  On Friday, Trump again dealt a blow to the Iran nuclear deal by ‘de-certifying’ Iran’s compliance with the deal. The deal is working: he is wrong about Iran’s actions, and he is ratcheting up the rhetoric that could send us into war. (Not exactly the work of a very stable genius.)  Congress now has an opportunity to decide whether they will go along with him. If they vote to impose new sanctions on Iran, it could make a tense situation even more volatile. The best thing Congress can do right now is nothing: staying out of the deal and letting it work will keep Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, and prevent escalation.  Learn more with this explainer, then:

  • Call Senators Feinstein and Harris and Rep. Paul Cook and ask them to use their platform and issue statements immediately, calling on Trump to stay in the deal and to choose diplomacy over war.  Ask them also to state clearly that Trump has no congressional authority to take military action in Iran.  Sample script here.

STOP SPENDING BILL FROM SLASHING EPA BUDGET:   Congress must pass a new spending bill by January 19th to keep the government running. President Trump and his EPA administrator Scott Pruitt, along with anti-environmental allies in Congress, are pushing for deep cuts to EPA funding that will make critical environmental cleanups impossible in the future.  The agency will be forced to eliminate staff and slash clean water, clean air, toxic cleanups, energy efficiency, and enforcement programs.  They have also proposed massive cuts to the Interior Department and other agencies that protect our air, water, wildlife, lands, and health. They are trying to tack dozens of anti-environmental riders onto the bill that would undo critical EPA standards and roll back countless other environmental laws.  Our IMB Environmental Team asks that you call Senators Feinstein and Harris and tell them we are counting on them to stand strong against this dangerous bill!  Sample script here.

TRUMP’S SURVEILLANCE AUTHORITY:  The House voted 256-164 to raise the #TrumpThreatLevel by granting the administration broad spying authority. This dangerous bill heads next to the Senate, which will make or break Trump’s and Sessions’ ability to search through massive amounts of Americans’ electronic communications without obtaining a warrant.  They will likely vote on the bad surveillance bill the House passed earlier this week on Tuesday or Wednesday. If it passes, it will go to Trump’s desk for his signature. Call  Senators Feinstein and Harris now and tell them to vote no.  Sample scripts here.

REMINDER: Action meeting Tuesday, January 8, 2018 (1-8-18 – how cute!) at 6:00 pm.   Please register HERE

In this meeting we will hear back from the IMB Assessment Team and, discuss what the new organizational structure might look like.  This is an opportunity to get in on the ground floor, so to speak – to help shape Indivisible Morongo Basin for 2018.  A new leadership team will be forming, and this team will work with the Assessment Team and mentors from the outgoing leadership team to create a new organizational structure.  Included in this project is identifying several small, do-able tasks requiring as little as an hour per week. What might your contribution be???  ☺

  Also at Tuesday’s meeting:

  • Voter registration training – come early at 5 p.m.  Free!
  • Special opportunity to help the hunger-strikers from Adelanto Detention Center:  Clothes, shoes, toiletries, back packs, underwear, socks, towels, etc. are needed to help the men being released from Adelanto.  These men are released with nothing but the clothes on their back.  Donated clothes can be placed in a bag marked “S-M-L”.  Donations may be given to the Immigration Team at the Action Meeting on Tuesday.

NEWS FROM INDIVISIBLE NATIONAL

Dear Indivisibles,

Congress gets back to work this week and they already have a full plate. The good news? Democrats Doug Jones and Tina Smith were sworn into the Senate last week (seeing D-Alabama is really cool, right?), which means we now only need to peel off two Republicans to stop more of the Trump agenda. A single vote could make all the difference in upcoming fights!

While it’s a new year, Trump hasn’t changed a bit. Over the holidays and into the New Year, he’s attacked North Korea on Twitter again, and attacked Robert Mueller and the Russia investigation multiple times (he’s a very stable genius, everyone).

But don’t get too distracted by Trump’s antics, Congress has an ambitious agenda that includes passing another government funding bill, and new issues are emerging, like a scammy infrastructure package and benefit cuts — the second could threaten important priorities like Medicare and Social Security.

Here’s a preview of the biggest fights coming up, and what you can do to take action:

  • Make the Tax Scam Artists pay for their vote. We haven’t forgotten about all the GOP members of Congress (MoCs) who voted to give the wealthiest Americans and corporations a massive tax cut at the expense of the rest of us. We’ll make them pay for this massive betrayal by replacing these elected officials and repealing the tax scam. Our own Rep. Paul Cook recently sent out a 2 page mailer repeating the GOP party line statements.  He knows that we are holding him accountable for voting for this terrible tax scam.  Call Rep. Cook and tell him you are not buying his baloney and that you will remember how he voted in November when you will vote to replace him.
  • Tell Democratic MoCs to make a choice: fight for Dreamers or be part of the Deportation Caucus. By the end of next week, Republicans will need Democratic votes in order to pass a new bill to fund the government and keep it open (Democrats in the Senate and possibly some in the House!), so Democrats have even more leverage than they did a month ago. It’s crucial that Democrats use that leverage to vote down the bill if it doesn’t include a clean Dream Act to protect the 800,000 young Americans whose lives the president threw into turmoil last year by rescinding DACA. In December, 30 Senate Democrats voted to protect Dreamers, but we need more to fight for Dreamers this week.  Thank Senators Feinstein and Harris for taking the Dreamer Pledge and ask them to hold steady. Sample script here.
  • Trump and Mitch McConnell have both said they intend to move to infrastructure early this year. What we know, based on earlier proposals, is that Trump’s infrastructure plan is intended to line the pockets of private companies and foreign investors at the expense of local governments and their own priorities. We expect an announcement of some kind of “plan” (probably no more than a page or two of broad concepts) the week of January 15. Get ready for this fight to #StopTrumpTolls.

This week’s #TrumpThreatLevel

When he de-certified the Iran Deal back in October, Trump threatened to throttle the deal next time he got the chance, if Congress didn’t act. Congress didn’t act, and now Trump has another deadline in January where he could break the deal and take us closer to war with Iran. Call Rep. Paul Cook and Senators Feinstein and Harris to tell them to protect the deal and keep us out of war, and catch up on the state of play for the fate of the Iran deal.

In solidarity,
The Indivisible Team

Happy New Year!!!

SAVE THE DATE:  The 2018 Women’s March will take place on Saturday, January 20, from noon to 2:00 pm on the corner of Old Woman Springs Road and Highway 62.  This event will be organized by The Morongo Basin Democratic Club, as was last year’s Women’s March.  More information to come…

How to Protest Safely training is available at no charge. Training will be offered on Saturday morning, January 13 at the Yucca Valley Community Center.  RSVP to contact@indivisiblemb.org  for more information.

Good Morning!

We can breathe a little sigh of relief:  2017 is officially behind us.  It wasn’t a fabulous year.  But, it could have been worse.  It could have been much worse.  But, thanks to the resistance movement we all made it through somewhat intact.

Thanks to your efforts much has been accomplished this year on the national stage. We do not have a border wall, we do not have a racist Muslim ban, and although the Affordable Care Act received a major blow with the amendment to the tax scam bill, it still stands.  We still have healthcare – at least for now.

But, these are only a few of the successes.  Many, many people continue to work together to create pushback in their communities and collectively all across the country. These numerous smaller acts of resistance all add up to reflect the continued resistance movement in this country.  The country is standing together, Indivisible, to resist Trump’s agenda.

If you would like to peruse an extensive list of successful resistance efforts, I recommend Small Victories (thanks, JS!)  It is quite inspiring – and, empowering, to see everything that’s happened this year, and to realize that each of us are a part of this movement.  We each contribute what we can, and together we are making a difference.

As we step into 2018, I’d like to acknowledge each of you and the contributions that you have made toward resisting Trump’s agenda as part of the Indivisible Morongo Basin team.  While we may not have had great success with moving Paul Cook toward a more progressive position, we have come together throughout the year for monthly Action Meetings, several protests, vigils and rally’s, and numerous (!!) phone calls and faxes to our representatives.   We still stand Indivisible in the Morongo Basin.

As you know, when IMB  began a year ago, we hit the ground running. There was no time to effectively organize.  This resulted in a few people holding a large amount of responsibility.  We’ve learned that this model is inefficient and unsustainable.  As we transition into 2018, we know that it’s time for a change.  It’s time to reboot for 2018.

We have been looking at ways to simplify and to break down large responsibilities into smaller, more manageable tasks that can be shared by many people.  Many people, each holding a small responsibility, make the group stronger and more sustainable.  This is where you come in.

Our next Action Meeting will be on Tuesday, January 9 at 6:00 pm. (Please register here.)  In this meeting we will hear back from the IMB Assessment Team and, discuss what the new organizational structure might look like. ☺

I think 2018 will be a good year.  I am a bit surprised to find myself feeling so optimistic today.  But, I think this is due to the successes of the resistance movement, and to all of the amazing people that I have met right here in this basin through the resistance work that we have been doing together.

Thank you.  I offer my heartfelt thanks to each of you. You all rock!

And, I wish you the very Best in 2018!

In gratitude,

Beth

ALABAMA…!!!!  Congratulations to Doug Jones and the people who worked so hard to elect him (including you!).  That’s one more vote in the Senate against the Trump Agenda!  A BIG win!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY:   Indivisible at One!

WE MUST BE READY:  The drumbeat from the right wing against the Mueller probe is getting louder.  IMB is making preparations for emergency response and will keep members informed.  Please watch for email alerts and check Indivisiblemb.org for updates.

TAX SCAM:  It’s not over til it’s over, but it’s not looking good. The votes to pass the #GOPTaxScam appear to be there in both the House and Senate. Trump could even sign it into law by Wednesday.

1) In the Senate:  No Jones, No Vote. Republicans are rushing to a final vote on the Trump Tax Scam “conference report” (see this Legislative Process 101 explainer on what a Conference Committee is) THIS WEEK, before Senator-elect Doug Jones is seated (see this explainer on why this matters). The people of Alabama have spoken, and they rejected the Trump agenda. Their voices deserve to be heard, and that means no vote on the Trump Tax Scam before Doug Jones is in the Senate. Use the Indivisible call tool to call the GOP’s constituents in red states and connect them to their Senators to say #NoJonesNoVote.

2) We must hold Rep. Paul Cook accountable.  Never relent. Never forget. This bill would leave 13 million more people uninsured, raise taxes on 83 million families, and add $1.4 trillion to the deficit. And why? To give massive tax cuts to millionaires, corporations, and members of Congress themselves. This is a subversion of Democracy, and we will hold Rep. Cook accountable together.

  • Call Rep. Cook and tell him we will remember his vote.
  • One last rally!  Tuesday Dec. 19 at noon, this time in San Bernardino.  1135 E. Highland Ave. (corner of Highland and Valencia).  Facebook Event page here.
  • Light Brigade in Victorville!  All hands on deck for Rep. Cook’s “NO GOP TAX SCAM” Light Brigade starting at 5:30 PM this Monday.  Meet up at Victorville Park & Ride at Amargosa & Bear Valley Road.  Facebook Event page here; ACCEPT the invite if you can attend and private message if you can volunteer to hold a letter.
  • See photos and video from last week’s colorful rally at Rep. Cook’s office in Apple Valley.  Santas and Grinches were there in force.
  • Oddity:  Somehow we missed this the first time around, but when the House was preparing to pass their version of the tax scam back in mid-November, the L.A. Times wrote that Rep. Cook was “praying on how to vote.”  According to the Times, he stated, “’We’re still talking about; that’s all.  I’m just still talking about it . I have to say my prayers and get divine guidance,’ Cook said. ‘And if I’m right, I’m going to vote the right way and go to a race track right afterward.’”  ???!

TELL SENATOR FEINSTEIN TO PICK A SIDE:  DREAM Hero or DREAM Killer.

The government will shut down Saturday, December 23, at 12:00am if a continuing resolution is not passed to keep it funded.  Earlier this year, Democrats promised that they would fight for immigrant youth by refusing to vote for a Continuing Resolution budget deal that didn’t include a clean DREAM Act.  But only a handful of Senators and House Members kept their promise to immigrant youth facing Trump’s deportation machine earlier this month.  Senator Kamala Harris kept her promise; Senator Dianne Feinstein did not.  Senate Democrats have huge leverage to pass a clean DREAM Act — they need to use it.  1000 young people lose protection every week that Congress fails to act.  That means a vote for a budget that doesn’t include the DREAM Act is a vote to deport DREAMers.  CALL SENATOR FEINSTEIN and tell her to pick a side: either fight for DREAMers now, or let thousands more face deportation.  Sample call script here.

OUR MONUMENTS UNDER ATTACK:  Secretary of the Interior Zinke and President Trump made good this month on their promise to roll back our national monuments, decimating Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante monuments in Utah, and Zinke is hinting at introducing hunting to the new Castle Mountains National Monument in the east Mojave Desert.  Rep. Paul Cook personally targeted the Castle Mountains monument, arguing that Castle Mountains was “created without any local outreach or input” – a claim that is clearly not trueLet Rep. Cook know how you feel about our national monuments.

DEADLINES THIS WEEK:

  • National Park Fees Deadline Dec. 22!   This week is the last chance to submit comments on the Trump administration proposal for massive fee increases in 17 national parks — increases that could see entrance fees jump from $25 to $70.   Get the full story here, then submit your comment on the fee increase by the Dec. 22 deadline!   And call Rep. Paul Cook using this sample script.
  • ACA Signups Extended to Dec. 22!  Despite sabotage efforts from the Trump Administration, the ACA remains, and Covered CA has extended signups for January 1 to December 22.  Find out more at Covered CA.

PROHIBITED LANGUAGE:  The Trump administration is continuing its war on science through language.  It’s critical to call out these attempts to control what’s possible by controlling what’s allowed to be said.  This is a good time for a letter to the editor (helpful links here) or a call-in to the radio.  In the last few days:

  • At the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:  “The Trump administration is prohibiting officials at the nation’s top public health agency from using a list of seven words or phrases — including “fetus” and “transgender” — in official documents being prepared for next year’s budget.” —  Washington Post
  • In Joshua Tree National Park Headquarters:  “National news media are reporting that Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke flew David Smith, superintendent for Joshua Tree National Park, to Washington, D.C., last month to order him to clamp down on tweets asserting climate change is real.” – Hi-Desert Star, and see also The Hill

NET NEUTRALITY:  The FCC took the dread step last week to end net neutrality, but that’s not the end of the story.  Action is moving to the courts as a number of states, including California, are filing lawsuitsThere are also some initiatives in the works to get Congress to take action on this; stay tuned for information to come.  And by the way, Rep. Paul Cook has taken in a total of $26,800 in contributions from the telecom industry.

HELPING REFUGEES FROM ADELANTO:  Several of the hunger-strikers released from Adelanto Detention Center are now living with ankle bracelets, for which they must pay a monthly fee of over $400 until their cases are settled even though it is illegal for them to work.  The organization CIVIC is raising funds to pay off the full bond for Emmanuel, an asylum seeker from Haiti, to rid him of these shackles and this impossible monthly fee.  Please consider contributing to Emmanuel’s freedom.

IMB UPDATE:  At the Dec. 5 Action Meeting a vigorous discussion was held on the issue of participating in electoral activity, and the decision was made to continue the matter to a future meeting.  Please note that the next Action Meeting will be January 9 and will include important discussion regarding the future of IMB – so mark your calendar!

Week of December 10, 2017

They said there would be a LOT crammed in to the end of the year, and they were right!  The Tax Scam and DACA are paramount, but there’s an issue for everyone.  So grab a cup of coffee and get busy RESISTING!

Special tip:   Remember that if you can’t get through on the phone, you can always fax, email, or leave a comment on your representative’s Facebook page or Twitter feed.

TRUMP TAX SCAM:  NOT A DONE DEAL!

Republicans from the House and Senate are negotiating a combined Tax Scam bill in a Conference Committee.  On Friday, Republican members of the Committee announced that it will take longer than expected to finish the next version of the bill. That’s a good sign: there are big differences between the bills that will be tough to resolve.  When they do finish, it comes back up for a vote in each chamber – and it will be close, again.  Now is the time to say that we WILL NOT accept a handout to millionaires and billionaires.  See the whole state of play for the Tax Scam here.  Then:

  • RALLY AGAIN!!!   TUESDAY DEC. 12, 10:30 A.M.   Contact IMB for carpooling.  Facebook Event page hereplease share!  14955 Dale Evans Parkway, Apple Valley, CA 92307.
  • Call Rep. Paul Cook and tell him to vote no! on the tax bill.
  • Call Senators Feinstein and Harris and let them know you’re thankful they voted against the tax scam and you hope they stay strong when the bill comes back from conference.
  • Hard-hitting ads targeting Rep. Cook’s support for the tax bill are running on-line, sponsored by Americans Against Double Taxation.  Like and share the ad on Facebook!  Learn more about the ad campaign on Politico.
  • Rep. Paul Cook defends his vote on the opinion page of the Victor Valley Daily Press, claiming the “House Tax Plan is good for working-class Americans”.  Join hundreds of others in responding to Rep. Cook with a different view on his Facebook page.
  • Southern California is currently experiencing catastrophic loss from wildfires, but by voting for the Tax Scam, Rep. Cook voted to end the deduction for wildfire and earthquake victims –though not recent hurricane victims. The LA Times has the story, and MSNBC calls out the California Republicans who voted for it – including Congressman Paul Cook.
  • Last week’s rally was loud and energetic, with over 100 people attending.  View video of the protest, and read about it in the Daily Press.  Thanks to everyone who came out!  Let’s do it again this Tuesday!

SENATOR FEINSTEIN AND REP. COOK, STAND UP FOR THE DREAMERS!

Last week, both the House and the Senate passed a “continuing resolution” (CR) to keep the government open for another two weeks — without including a clean DREAM Act For three months Senate Democrats said that they would use the leverage they would have on the CR to protect DREAMers. But just 8 Senate Democrats kept their word by voting against the CR (thank you, DREAMHero Senator Kamala Harris!). The rest voted to deport Dreamers – including Senator Dianne Feinstein.  As a result, in the next two weeks, 1,708 Dreamers will lose their protection under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, an Obama-era executive action that allowed them to apply for work permits and live without fear of deportation.  Dec. 22 is the next opportunity Senator Feinstein and Rep. Cook will have to fight for Dreamers.  Here’s what we must do:

SAFEGUARD SACRED AND CULTURAL TRIBAL OBJECTS:  Efforts to repatriate tribal property are hitting roadblocks within the Trump administration.  While the administration delays action, Native American cultural items are continuing to leave the U.S and go across the seas to be sold.  S.1400, the Safeguarding Tribal Objects of Patrimony Act, bars the export of items that are otherwise covered in the U.S. by the Native American Graves and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and other cultural protection laws.  Get the background from our IMB Environmental Team, then call Senators Feinstein and Harris and Rep. Paul Cook and tell them to support S.1400Sample script here.

NET NEUTRALITY:  DON’T LET THE FCC SELL THE INTERNET OUT!

The FCC is about to vote to end net neutrality—breaking the fundamental principle of the open Internet—and only an avalanche of calls to Congress can stop it.  FCC Chairman Ajit Pai is pushing a  plan where the FCC would relinquish its authority to enforce its common-sense, light-touch net neutrality rules, thus giving telecommunications companies free rein to engage in unfair practices like site blocking, throttling, and paid prioritization—”fast lanes” for sites that pay, and slow lanes for everyone else.   Senator Harris and Senator Feinstein have taken positions in support of net neutrality; Rep. Paul Cook has notCall Rep. Cook and tell him to oppose efforts to roll back net neutrality protections.  Don’t let the FCC sell the Internet out!  Sample scripts here.

COOK SUPPORTS CONCEALED CARRY GUN BILL:   Rep. Paul Cook voted in favor of legislation that passed the House last week to permit concealed carry license holders to conceal a handgun in other states, the first time Congress has taken action on a gun bill since President Donald Trump was sworn into office.  The “Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act,” a top priority for the National Rifle Association and other gun-rights groups, passed 231-198.  Rep. Cook also has received $7000 in donations from the NRA since 2012Let Rep. Cook know what you think of his vote.

Week of December 3, 2017

There is a lot going on this week, Indivisibles, and we need to stay focused and relentless!  Here are the four critical priorities for IMB this week, with details below:

  • NOW:  Call Rep. Paul Cook and tell him to insist on going to conference and then vote NO! on the tax scam.
  • TUESDAY:  Rally at Rep. Cook’s office to oppose the tax scam.
  • TUESDAY:  Important IMB meeting!  We will be considering whether to engage in electoral activity supporting candidates.  Everyone needs to weigh in!
  • WEDNESDAY:  Rally at Rep. Cook’s office in support of DREAMers – time is running out, and our officials must include DACA in the December spending bill!  And start calling Senator Feinstein now!
  • BONUS:  Report-back from our super Tax Scam Actioneers last Sunday in Yucca Valley!

NOW and TUESDAY:  Hold Rep. Paul Cook Accountable on the Tax Scam!

In the middle of the night, on a 51-49 party line vote, Senate Republicans passed their tax scam, a plan that would have devastating impacts on California’s 8th District and across the country.  And it will come back to the House for a final vote this week.   Friday night’s vote was a tough loss, but the tax scam is not yet lawWe’re down, but not yet out.  Republicans have publicly stated that they’ll “go to conference,” where they’ll merge the two bills together. But we’ll believe it when we see it — the House could just as easily pass the Senate version (read this explainer on what happens next here).

LET’S SHOW REP. PAUL COOK WE’RE HOLDING HIM ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE FINAL BILL!

  • RALLY:  TUESDAY DEC. 5, 10:30 A.M.   Contact IMB for carpooling.  Facebook Event page hereplease share!  14955 Dale Evans Parkway, Apple Valley, CA 92307.
  • Call Rep. Paul Cook and tell him to insist on going to conference and then vote no! on the tax bill.  We want to make sure that the House does not pass the Senate version as-is.  If we can delay the process, we increase our chances of defeating the tax scam.

IMPORTANT MEETING – TUESDAY DEC 5, 6 PM.   At this month’s Action Meeting we’ll be discussing and preparing to vote on whether Indivisible Morongo Basin should participate in electoral activities.   Indivisible Morongo Basin currently is a nonpartisan group that is not engaging in electoral activity, and our members have a range of opinions on whether to do so as an organization.  Learn more about the options and implications of electoral participation on the Indivisible435 websiteREGISTER HERE.  Also at Tuesday’s meeting:

  • Postcard party!  Come early at 5 p.m. to fill out postcards to decision-makers.
  • Voter registration training – come early at 5 p.m.  Free!
  • Special opportunity to help the hunger-strikers from Adelanto Detention Center:  At the meeting the Immigration Team will be accepting donations for these refugees who have been released with essentially nothing – needed are clothes, shoes, toiletries, back packs, underwear, socks, towels, etc.  Clothes can be placed in a bag marked “S-M-L”.

#DREAMAct:  Rally TUESDAY and calls critical ALL WEEK!

However the Tax Scam vote ends, Congress’ attention (and ours) now shifts to the government spending bill. The government will shut down this Friday, December 8 unless a “continuing resolution” (CR) is passed. A CR allows Congress to extend the current government funding levels to keep the government open temporarily.  Democrats have real leverage in this fight. Republicans need 60 votes in the Senate and spending bills in the House have required Democratic votes to pass in recent years. We’re calling on Democrats to use their leverage to support Dreamers — and Senator Feinstein has not yet taken the Pledge.  Read more and find out how you can help Dreamers here.  Then:

  • Rally!  Join the ACLU of Southern California, the IE Dream Act Council, CHIRLA and more for a rally on Dec. 6th the National Day of Action for the DREAM Act.  We will be outside of Rep. Cook’s office demanding that he support undocumented youth this holiday season by standing in support of a clean DREAM Act.  Bring your friends, family and neighbors. Everyone is welcome.  RSVP here.  Wednesday, December 6, 12:00 p.m.  Contact IMB for carpooling.  14955 Dale Evans Parkway, Apple Valley, CA 92307.
  • Call Rep. Paul Cook and tell him to stand in support of a clean DREAM Act!
  • Call Senator Feinstein and tell her to be a DREAM hero and pledge to vote no on any Continuing Resolution that doesn’t include a clean DREAM Act.  Sample script here.
  • Tune in to Facebook Live TONIGHT at 5:30pm PT.  Indivisible’s policy team will be joined by United We Dream to talk about how we can fight to get the DREAM Act included in the government spending bill this week.

REPORT-BACK ON THE YUCCA VALLEY TAX SCAM ACTION:  Members of IMB created a series of signs with a message on the Tax Scam and used them on Sunday Nov 26 at Highway 62 and 247.  “Unfolding in a sequential fashion, like retro Burma Shave signs planted by the side of country roads in the 40s and 50s, the signs cautioned ‘Beware the Washington Tax Scam’ and declared the so-called tax reform will cut taxes for the rich and raise taxes for the middle class.”  Read Gayle’s full report back here.  THANKS to everyone who worked on this action and came out to support!

Week of November 26, 2017

IMPORTANT MEETING:   At our next Action Meeting (Dec. 5) we’ll be discussing and attempting to come to consensus on whether Indivisible Morongo Basin should participate in electoral activities.   Indivisible National has launched Indivisible435, “a nationwide electoral campaign advocating for progressive values and candidates in every single congressional district across the country.”  This new direction is a major departure from the original stated mission of Indivisible and is optional for local groups, not mandatory. Indivisible Morongo Basin currently is a nonpartisan group that is not engaging in electoral activity, and our members have a range of opinions on whether to do so as an organization.  Learn more about the options and implications of electoral participation on the Indivisible435 websitePlease plan to attend this meeting and help make this decision at 6 pm on Dec. 5.  Meetings details available soon.

TRUMP TAX SCAM  NATIONAL DAY – AND WEEK! – OF ACTION

The Senate is back in session and is expected to vote on the Motion to Proceed (a pre-vote vote) as early as Wednesday and could take a final vote as early as Friday. You already know this bill is bad, but if you need a reminder of how bad it is, read up on it here.  Today, Nov. 27, is a National Day of Action to stop the #TrumpTaxScam, and action must continue all this week.  Here’s what we can do:

  • Los Angeles Indivisible National Tax Scam Sit-In TODAY at Senator Diane Feinstein’s office in Los Angeles.  Noon.   RSVP Here
  • Call fellow progressives in key #TrumpTaxScam target states and patch them through to their Senators.  Indivisible National has brought back a super effective peer-to-peer calling tool from the TrumpCare fight so you can take action to stop this bill by reaching out to progressive constituents in Alaska, Arizona, Tennessee, and West Virginia. Get started now.
  • Don’t stop:  Already called our California Senators?  Call them again!  Call Senators Feinstein and Harris and ask them to commit to withholding consent on votes in the Senate.  See sample script here.  Can’t get through on the phone?  For Senator Feinstein:  email Ellen Baron, Legislative Assistant, at ellen_baron@feinstein.senate.gov.  For Senator Harris:  email Clint Odom, Legislative Director, at clint_odom@harris.senate.gov
  • Talk it up!   It’s easier than you think to discuss the tax bill with family and others, using this great guide.
  • Glutton for punishment?  Here’s the text of the full bill.

IF WE LOSE NET NEUTRALITY:  The Internet will become a closed network where ISPs could block any content that they don’t like.  Competition will be destroyed since ISPs can block any applications that compete with their products.  ISPs can split the Internet into packages, so you won’t be able to pay one price to access all websites. Demand the FCC maintain Net Neutrality!

NEW WAY TO HELP REFUGEES FROM ADELANTO:  Several of the hunger-strikers released from Adelanto Detention Center are now living with ankle bracelets, for which they must pay a monthly fee of over $400 until their cases are settled even though it is illegal for them to work.  The organization CIVIC is raising funds to pay off the full bond for Emmanuel, an asylum seeker from Haiti, to rid him of these shackles and this impossible monthly fee.  Please consider contributing to Emmanuel’s freedom.

CONGRATULATIONS!  NATIONAL PARK FEES DEADLINE EXTENDED!   Many of you joined in demanding an extension of the comment period for the Trump administration proposal for massive fee increases in 17 national parks — increases that could see entrance fees jump from $25 to $70.  And – success!  The deadline has been extended to Dec. 22.   So if you haven’t gotten your comments in, you still have time.  Get the full story here, then submit your comment on the fee increase by the new Dec. 22 deadline!   And call Rep. Paul Cook using this sample script.

CELEBRATE WITH COURAGEOUS RESISTANCE PALM SPRINGS:  Our sister group Courageous Resistance Palm Springs and Other Desert Cities has had quite a year, and our members are invited to join them in celebrating their Year in Review on their first anniversary!  Celebration will take place on Monday, Dec. 11, at Mizell Senior Center, 480 S. Sunrise Way in Palm Springs.  REFRESHMENTS!  Bonus:  The Desert Sun features the story of Palm Springs Courageous Resistance, the low-desert Sanctuary City movement, and activists Joy Silver and Lynne O’Neill.

DESPITE SABOTAGE EFFORTS, THE ACA REMAINS—AND OPEN ENROLLMENT IS HERE:  Healthcare sign-ups have started, and the Trump Administration is trying to keep people from knowing about it.  Don’t let them get away with it!  Get the latest on protecting your coverage and how to help others in our community take advantage of open enrollment from Indivisible National, and see our blog post for links.  Deadline is Dec. 15!

ACTION ALERT! – November 24, 2017

PROTEST THE TRUMP TAX SCAM TODAY, SUNDAY NOV. 26!
11 a.m. in Yucca Valley

Assemble at the northeast corner of Highway 62 and Old Woman Springs Road.
Bring American flags and signs that target the tax bill.

Trump Tax Scam:  Bad for You, GREAT for Corporations!  With this Tax Scam, families making $75,000 or less each year will end up paying MORE taxes to fund tax cuts for people making $500,000 and up.  Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security will take big hits to fund permanent corporate tax breaks.  “Trickle-down economics” didn’t work the last time they tried it, and it won’t work this time, either.  Get the details here!

Rep. Paul Cook already voted for it – and sold out California and his constituents!  Let’s show him what we think of his vote!

A THANKSGIVING MESSAGE FROM INDIVISIBLE NATIONAL:

“When our team sits down to our respective tables this coming Thursday, one of the big things we’ll be giving thanks for is you: the incredible people that have stepped up this year. We say it time and time again, but we mean it… we are not the leaders of this movement. You are.

“We’ll be in touch a few times over the holiday to prepare for a big week following, but we hope you are getting the time you need to give thanks and be with those you love.

“Thank you, deeply, for everything.

“In solidarity,
“The Indivisible Team”

And if you want to share the spirit of thanksgiving, consider a donation to the fund to release the hunger-strikers at Adelanto Detention Center

TRUMP TAX SCAM – THE CRUNCH IS ON!

We have 12 days to stop the #TrumpTaxScamBy now you know that Senate Republicans snuck a repeal of the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate into the #TrumpTaxScam.  Just in California, 1,810,000 people would lose health insurance coverage.  And Mitch McConnell and his cronies didn’t stop there.  A new analysis from the nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation (think the Congressional Budget Office of tax) shows that the bill would mean everyone making less than $75,000 a year would, on average, see a tax INCREASE while corporations get permanent tax cuts.  3,969,800 California families would see a tax increase.

This whole process could be done as early as November 30. On Thursday, the House passed their version of the bill (with Rep. Paul Cook’s help) and the Senate Finance Committee approved their version along party lines. The Senate could vote on a motion to proceed (the pre-vote vote) as soon as Monday, November 27th and bring the bill to a full floor vote as early as Thursday, November 30. Once it passes the Senate, it’ll go back to the House where they’ll rubber stamp the Senate’s plans and move it onto Donald Trump’s desk.

So what do you do now?  Get the latest information on the Tax Scam, then:

NATIONAL PARK FEES – DEADLINE FOR COMMENTS THIS THURSDAY!!  The Trump administration has proposed massive fee increases in 17 national parks — increases that could see entrance fees jump from $25 to $70. And they’re only giving the public 30 days to comment.  Get the full story here, then:

ACLU LAUNCHES DACA ADS AIMED AT REP. PAUL COOK:   Per the Daily Press, “[a]n affiliate for the American Civil Liberties Union launched radio ads this week targeting Rep. Paul Cook and demanding his support for young immigrant ‘Dreamers,’ suggesting the Congressman possessed some political punch on any forthcoming legislation.”  Visit the ACLU’s #CAismyHome website, then build on their efforts by calling Rep. Cook and telling him to take the DREAMer Pledge.

UPDATE:  CADIZ WATER PROJECT TAKING A PAUSE?  Could it be the need for approval from the State Lands Commission?

Week of November 12, 2017

YOU’RE MAKING A DIFFERENCE!  Last Tuesday’s IMB Action Meeting was an inspiration, with members sharing their enduring commitment to resistance on the anniversary of that fateful Election Day a year ago.   And throughout the meeting exciting results kept coming in from Virginia and elsewhere – a real boost!  Indivisible National totes up some of the organizing efforts that went into successful outcomes across the nation – your fellow Indivisibles!  Special thanks to those who came to the meeting early for voter registration training – let’s make sure that Election Day 2018 brings out the most voters ever!

KEY TRUMP TAX SCAM VOTE THIS WEEK:  The House votes on the Trump Tax Scam Wednesday or Thursday. Republicans want to pass their tax bill so fast that no one knows what’s in it. During Committee mark up this week, Republicans released three different versions of legislative text to make their fuzzy math work and keep everyone confused about what exactly the bill does. But there may be just enough hold outs on the Republican side to slow them down — if we keep up the pressureHow we keep the pressure on:

IT’S TIME FOR SENATOR FEINSTEIN TO TAKE THE DREAMER PLEDGE:  This week, we were proud to support our friends at United We Dream in their National Day of Action to protect immigrant youth. Thousands of youth walked out of schools on Thursday to call for a clean DREAM Act — including in Washington DC, where hundreds of students took over every floor the Hart Senate office building! To stand indivisible means to treat an attack on one as an attack on all. That is why we are calling on Congress to pass a clean DREAM Act in December as part of their must-pass spending bill. Republicans have made it clear they will not include the DREAM Act in the December funding bill, so it’s up to Democrats to play hardball.  Call Senator Feinstein and urge her to join Senator Harris in taking the  DREAMer Pledge and committing to withhold her vote on the next spending bill in December unless it contains a clean DREAM Act.  More info and sample scripts here.

DON’T LET TRUMP REWARD TORTURE ADVOCATE:  Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has scheduled a Monday vote to confirm Steven Bradbury for a position at the Department of Transportation. Bradbury is infamous for writing the Bush-era torture memos and should never serve in government again, especially under Trump.  Get the background, then call Senators Feinstein and Harris and tell them to vote no on Steven Bradbury!  Sample scripts here.

SUPPORT AND FUND NATIONAL PARKS – FOR ALL!

The Trump administration just proposed massive fee increases in 17 national parks — increases that could see entrance fees jump from $25 to $70. And they’re only giving the public 30 days to comment.

The administration claims this fee hike will help address the $11.3 billion maintenance backlog in national parks, but Interior Secretary Zinke estimates that the new fees could raise around $70 million annually. That’s just a tiny fraction of the maintenance backlog!  The solution to the parks’ repair needs should fall to Congress, and cannot and should not be shouldered by its visitors. There is a bill, the National Park Service Legacy Act (S. 751 and HR 2584), pending in Congress that addresses the National Park Service maintenance backlog and it deserves the Department of the Interior’s support. This bipartisan legislation would provide a more substantial — and sustainable — investment in our parks.  They could also use revenue from oil, gas, coal and other mining revenues and/or extend the Land and Water Conservation Fund to allow off shore oil and gases lease revenue to help maintain public lands.

Finally, the Administration is also considering reducing NPS annual budget from $400 million to $300 million, which will further reduce America’s commitment to our precious National Park System.

Call Rep. Paul Cook using this sample script.   And submit your comment on the fee increase to the Department of the Interior here!

CLIMATE CHANGE:  Governor Jerry Brown is refusing to follow Trump’s retreat on climate change.  This weekend he joined with other leaders determined to demonstrate that large numbers of Americans remain committed to fighting climate change at a United Nations climate conference in Bonn to pledge their support for the Paris agreement.  Our Environmental Issues Team suggests we let the governor know we support his leadership on climate change!

RESIST TRUMP’S EFFORTS TO UNDERMINE THE ACA:  Healthcare sign-ups have started, and the Trump Administration is trying to keep people from knowing about it.  Be sure to check your enrollment to make sure there are no unpleasant changes and also help others in our community take advantage of open enrollment.  See our blog post for links.

INDIVISIBLE NATIONAL LAUNCHES ELECTORAL PROJECT:  Indivisible National has announced the launch of Indivisible435, “a nationwide electoral campaign advocating for progressive values and candidates in every single congressional district across the country.”  This new direction is a major departure from the original stated mission of Indivisible. Indivisible Morongo Basin currently is a nonpartisan group that is not engaging in electoral activity, and our members have a range of opinions on whether to engage in electoral work as an organization.

  • At our next Action Meeting (December 5) we’ll be discussing pros and cons and attempting to come to consensus on this important question. Some of the options and potential consequences of electoral participation are explored on the Indivisible435 website.
  • If you want to know more about Indivisible435, tune in to Facebook Live TONIGHT at 5:30 pm PT.  Former Congressman and gubernatorial candidate Tom Perriello will join National’s political team to talk about their plans for 2018 and answer your questions live.

Week of November 5, 2017

ACTION MEETING NOV 7:   It’s been a year since the shock of the election – time to renew our commitment!   NEW LOCATION in Joshua Tree; register here.   Meeting starts at 6 p.m.

  • Voter registration is an action you can take NOW.  We’ll be doing voter registration training before the meeting; arrive at 5 p.m.  Free!

JUSTICE FOR THOSE HARMED BY GUN VIOLENCE:  Today we mourn the tragic mass shooting at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas.  At least 26 people were killed and dozens more injured in this horrific terrorist attack.  Stand with Sutherland Springs and stand with your fellow Indivisibles today: read this updated resource from Indivisible National on preventing gun violence, then contact Rep. Paul Cook and Senators Feinstein and Harris to demand that they block the gun lobby’s agenda now.

THE TRUMP TAX SCAM:  WHERE DO THEY STAND?

After dropping their bill on Thursday, the GOP is trying to rush through the #TrumpTaxScam, another massive (massive) giveaway to the rich.  House Republicans will begin marking up their bill as early as Monday.  And the Senate may introduce their bill this week as well.  It can’t be stressed enough: so much of what we care about is on the chopping block in the #TrumpTaxScam.  Here’s what the GOP is willing to do just to give themselves and their millionaire and billionaire friends a tax cut:

  • Penalize those with debt… and make them pay more: People with medical or student loan debt would no longer be able to deduct those expenses from their taxes.
  • Attack immigrants: More than 5 million immigrant parents with US-citizen children would no longer be able to receive the Child Tax Credit. And some immigrants working legally in the US would lose access to the Earned Income Tax Credit.
  • Stand in the way of adoptions: Adoptive parents would lose a key tax credit that helps offset the (very high!) costs of adoption.
  • Disincentivize job growth in rural and urban areas: The GOP also removes a tax credit that encourages businesses to invest in places hit the hardest by the recession — mostly rural communities and urban areas. (Hmm… what’s that about Trump being a jobs president again?)
  • Exacerbate wealth inequality: The #TrumpTaxScam gives huge tax cuts to the wealthy by phasing out the estate tax, repealing the Alternative Minimum Tax, and limiting the tax rate on income earned by hedge funds, private law firms, and the Trump Organization. The bill also slashes the corporate tax rate so corporations can line the pockets of their shareholders.
  • Add $1.5 trillion to the deficit: And once they balloon the deficit, they’ll use that as an argument to make deep, dangerous cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security in 2018.

It’s time to tell our Members of Congress how we feel.  Try to get them on the record about this bill.  Make sure they know where we stand and that we’ll be watching where they stand.  We’re already making them nervous, but we need sustained call volume to drive our point home.  Get your background information here, then:

  • Call Rep. Paul Cook and make him feel the heat.  See the Republican call script here.
  • Call Senators Feinstein and Harris and tell them to stay strong.  Democratic call script here.
  • Use the press:  Indivisible National has a terrific new resource for writing a letter to the editor about the Trump Tax Scam, including sample letters.  Let’s get people talking!  Write to newspapers locally and across the 8th District – find links for easy submission on our “Use the Press” website page.
  • Rep. Paul Cook has posted a video on his Facebook page that includes his “first impressions of the proposed tax reform bill” released last Thursday. Feel free to comment on his post (respectfully, so you don’t get blocked!) with your own “first impressions”.
  • Facebook Live TODAY, Monday 11/6 at 5:30 p.m.  Discussion of what’s ahead for the  #TrumpTaxScam and the week of action with Indivisible National and Rebecca Vallas, Managing Director, Poverty to Prosperity Program at the Center for American Progress.

TELL REP. COOK AND SENATOR FEINSTEIN:  IF NO CLEAN DREAM ACT, THEN NO SPENDING BILL!  On November 9, support our allies at United We DREAM as they kick off their Operation DREAM Act campaign. The clock is ticking to pass a clean DREAM Act before December and pressure is mounting. Late last week, Sens. Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Cory Booker, as well as Rep. Keith Ellison, all announced they won’t support the upcoming government spending bill unless Republicans move forward with protections for DREAMers.  Ask Rep. Paul Cook and Senator Dianne Feinstein to make the same pledge and commit to withholding their vote on the next spending bill in December unless it contains a clean DREAM Act.  More information and sample call scripts here.

UPDATE ON ADELANTO:   The State Department has told Homeland Security officials that Central Americans and Haitians no longer need special protection from deportation – potentially affecting the hunger-strikers at Adelanto Detention Center.  Let’s continue efforts to release the hunger-strikers with contributions to the CLUE Justice Adelanto Bond Fund.

WHOSE NATIONAL PARKS? OUR NATIONAL PARKS!!:  Trump’s Secretary of the Interior Zinke wants to raise admission fees to $70 per vehicle for Joshua Tree and 16 other National Parks.  Your comments are needed!  Deadline is November 23; find tools for making comments here.  Read about local reaction, including statements from JTNP Superintendent Dave Smith, in the HI-Desert Star and in the Desert Sun.

SPECIAL ACTION ALERT – November 2, 2017

THIS IS A SPECIAL ACTION ALERT.  THE REPUBLICAN TAX BILL HAS BEEN RELEASED.  TIME TO HIT THE PHONES!

House Republicans just released the text of the #TrumpTaxScam… and it’s a DISASTER-of-a-giveaway-to-fat-cat-Republican-donors (surprise, surprise). It adds $1.5 trillion to the deficit — which will force deep cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security down the road — all to give huge tax cuts to the wealthy, corporations, and to Donald Trump himself.

Now that we have some details of the legislation, it’s time to show up in a big, loud way. And we have major leverage right now: the GOP is struggling to get the votes they need to pass this bad bill. Hell, they couldn’t even figure out when to release it.  Now, we need to light. up. those. phone. lines.

The GOP actually delayed releasing this bill by several days because they’re getting pushback from their own party, lobbyists, and us! Here is what the bill released today does:

  • Gives huge tax cuts to the wealthy by phasing out the estate tax, repealing the Alternative Minimum Tax, and limiting the tax rate on income earned by hedge funds, private law firms, and the Trump Organization;
  • Slashes the corporate tax rate, so corporations can line the pockets of their shareholders, and incentivizes moving operations offshore;
  • Adds $1.5 trillion to the deficit, forcing deep cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security down the road.

Every single member of Congress needs to hear a loud, united message that this bill is a scam and we won’t stand for it.  Starting Friday, and into next week, we need to make a ton of calls:

And if you can’t get through on the phones, try email or fax, or even Facebook or Twitter!

LET’S MARCH!  PALM SPRINGS PRIDE PARADE:  Let’s carry our IMB banner and show we’re proud to join our brothers and sisters in resistance!  Our sister group Courageous Resistance Palm Springs and Other Desert Cities has invited Indivisible Morongo Basin to join their contingent in the Pride Parade on Sunday November 5.  Meet in front of Joshua Tree Health Foods at 9 a.m. to carpool to Palm Springs.  Bring hats and water and wear tee shirts and/or bandanas.  Individual signs are welcome.  More info:  323-493-2257.  Parade theme is “Viva la Vida!/Live the Life!”; parade details here.

ACTION MEETING NOV 7:   Register here.  Ten months in and the need for resistance is greater than ever!  6 p.m. at our new location in Joshua Tree; register for location.

  • Voter registration training available before the meeting; arrive at 5 p.m.  Free!
  • Have an idea for an action?  Let’s hear it!  Use our new Action Proposal form to move your idea forward.  Deadline for submission is Thursday Nov. 2.

A QUICK NOTE ON THE MUELLER INVESTIGATION:  If Trump fires Mueller or pardons indictees, we’ll need to respond rapidly.  Indivisible National will have almost-immediate analysis and ways to take action should that happen, and Indivisible Morongo Basin will be ready to respond.

#1 PRIORITY IS THE TAX SCAM!!   Republicans completed Phase 1 of their #TrumpTaxScam last Thursday, when 216 House Republicans (including Rep. Paul Cook!) voted to pass the budget resolution.  That means the stage is set for Republicans to cut taxes for the rich and corporations by forcing cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security down the road — unless we stop them.  Here’s what will happen next:  Republicans are expected to unveil the full text of their tax bill on Wednesday, after months of speculation.  The House is then expected to begin marking up their bill during the week of November 6 and they may vote as early as the week of November 13.  As soon as the House votes, the Senate will begin marking up their bill. The Senate will likely vote on their bill right before or right after Thanksgiving.  What do you do?  Get your background information here, then:

  • THURSDAY NOV. 2 WILL BE A NATIONAL CALL-IN DAY:  After the legislative text is released on Wednesday we will be sending a special Alert with analysis and scripts.  Mark your calendar and get ready to call our members of Congress!!
  • LETTERS TO THE EDITOR:  Rep. Paul Cook needs to feel the pressure from an informed public.  Write to newspapers across his District, call in to talk shows, spread the word on Facebook and Twitter.  Nov 6-11 will be a National Week of Action; let’s make sure people are talking!
  • Facebook Live TODAY, Monday 10/30 at 5:30 p.m.  Join Indivisible National and Emanuel Nieves of Prosperity Now to discuss the impact of the #TrumpTaxScam proposal, particularly on communities of color.

REPUBLICANS ARE COMING AFTER WOMEN’S REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS: The House Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice will hold a hearing on November 1 on the “Heartbeat Protection Act of 2017.” This bill is a draconian, anti-choice piece of legislation that would make it a federal crime for a doctor to perform an abortion on any woman whose fetus has a detectable heartbeat (which is at 6 weeks, well before many women even realize they are pregnant).  Tell Rep. Paul Cook you oppose this effort to criminalize women’s reproductive health.  Sample call script here.

PARTISAN CHIP BILL WOULD HARM OUR HEALTHCARE:   House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R CA-23) announced Thursday that the House would vote on a bill to fund the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) this week.  However, the bill (titled Healthy Kids Act H.R. 3921) extends CHIP by taking money away from the Affordable Care Act and weakening Medicare.  Tell Rep. Paul Cook to reauthorize CHIP using a bipartisan approach that won’t harm the American health care system.

YOUR INDIVIDUAL PRIVACY IS UNDER THREAT: Congress has until the end of the year to decide whether to protect Americans’ privacy or extend unconstitutional spying power to Trump. The Senate began marking up a bill last week, and the House Judiciary Committee is expected to take up a bill next week.  Read this explainer and call scriptThen start calling Senators Feinstein and Harris and Rep. Cook now!

JUDICIAL NOMINEES:  Mitch McConnell is trying to jam Trump’s bad judicial nominees through the Senate.  Up to six of Trump’s judicial nominees could be confirmed within the week, as part of a GOP effort to quickly push them through over Democratic and public objections.  Get the scoop and sample call scripts here.  Then call Senators Feinstein and Harris and tell them not to hold hearings or votes on judicial nominees unless both home senators have returned positive blue slips for them.

WHOSE NATIONAL PARKS? OUR NATIONAL PARKS!!:  Trump’s Secretary of the Interior Zinke wants to raise admission fees to $70 per vehicle for Joshua Tree and 16 other National Parks.  There will be an emergency public informational meeting this Thursday Nov. 2, coordinated by the National Parks Conservation Association and Mojave Desert Land Trust (MDLT).  JTNP Superintendent David Smith will be there, and information will be available on how to make your opinions known to policy makers. Meeting is 6:30 at MDLT Headquarters, 60124 29 Palms Hwy.  Deadline for comments is November 23; tools for making comments here.

GEO GROUP PROFITS UNDER TRUMP:  For-profit prison corporation GEO Group runs Adelanto Detention Center.  The Washington Post exposes GEO Group’s newfound success in Trump’s Washington – including events at a Trump-owed resort.  Let’s keep the resistance going and support the release of additional Adelanto hunger-strikers with contributions to the CLUE Justice Adelanto Bond Fund.

HEALTHCARE SIGN-UPS START THIS WEDNESDAY:  Be sure to check your enrollment to make sure there are no unpleasant changes!  Also, help others in our community take advantage of open enrollment.  See our blog post for links.

HATE-FREE JOSHUA TREE THIS WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 1:  Join Ted Quinn and others for Joshua Tree is a Hate-Free Zone: 20th Anniversary Reaffirmation.  “On November 1, 1997 citizens of Joshua Tree joined together at the corner of Hwy 62 and Park Blvd with candles, flowers, songs & prayers in solidarity with the targets of a hate crime in our community. This time we stand together once again to reaffirm the Declaration of Joshua Tree as a Hate-Free Zone. Followed by Food Not Bombs dinner at the Beatnik Lounge at 6 pm.”  Wednesday November 1, 5-6 pm, Coyote Corner. Facebook event page here.

Week of October 22, 2017

LET’S MARCH!  PALM SPRINGS PRIDE PARADE:  Our sister group Courageous Resistance Palm Springs and Other Desert Cities has invited Indivisible Morongo Basin to join their contingent in the Pride Parade on Sunday November 5.  Let’s show we’re proud to join our brothers and sisters in resistance!  More info coming soon on carpooling, etc.  We need someone to help organize our participants; if that’s you please contact us.  Parade details here.

HARD-WON VICTORIES AT ADELANTO!  Last week, our Immigration Issues Team delivered newly released Adelanto hunger-striker Luis to the airport in Los Angeles, a free man.  With Mateo’s bond reduced and other members of the Refugee Caravan freed, there’s much to celebrate!  Here are the inspiring updates(En Español)   Thanks to everyone who has contributed, and let’s keep the good news coming:  the CLUE Justice Adelanto Bond Fund still needs contributions to gain the liberation of the remaining hunger-strikers.

THE TRUMP TAX SCAM IS HERE:  On Thursday, the Senate passed a budget resolution to pave the way for the Trump Tax Scam, and the House will vote this Thursday to pass the Senate resolution, with a committee markup on the Trump Tax Scam likely in the next few weeks. That officially unlocks the reconciliation process — the same process Republicans tried to use for health care.  Understand the stakes and where we are in the process here.  Then:

  • Call Senators Feinstein and Harris and thank them for their vote against the budget resolution, and tell them to use every tool at their disposal—including withholding consent—to slow down and expose the Trump Tax Scam.   Sample call script here.
  • Rep. Paul Cook voted for the budget resolution that gives huge tax cuts to the rich and corporations that jeopardize our commitment to Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security. Call him now to let him know you’re disappointed in his vote and that you expect his next vote on the Trump Tax Scam to be a “no.”   Sample call script here.

LET’S STOP THE SABOTAGE OF OUR HEALTHCARE:  Senators Alexander (R-TN) and Murray (D-WA) have finalized a bipartisan deal that would help stabilize the ACA’s marketplaces. The deal isn’t perfect, but it’s far better than Trump’s unchecked sabotage of the ACA and open enrollment. What you can do:

9 MILLION KIDS ARE STILL AT RISK OF LOSING CHIP:  It’s hard to believe, but Congress still hasn’t reauthorized funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program, which 9 million kids rely on.  Let’s tell Rep. Paul Cook and Senators Feinstein and Harris to get off the dime and fund the program!  More information and sample call scripts here.

TAKE THE DREAMer PLEDGE:  It’s simple: Ask Rep Paul Cook to commit to supporting a CLEAN Dream Act.  Then ask Senators Feinstein and Harris to publicly commit to voting against a December spending bill unless it contains a clean DREAM Act.  Latest updates and sample call scripts here.

HATE-FREE JOSHUA TREE COMING UP NOVEMBER 1:  Join Ted Quinn and others for Joshua Tree is a Hate-Free Zone: 20th Anniversary Reaffirmation.

Week of October 15, 2017

FIRST, SOME GOOD NEWS:  Rep. Cook voted for hurricane relief for Puerto Rico!  Thank you for your phone calls!  Next time you call his office, congratulate him on doing the right thing.

THIS FRIDAY:  SCHOOLS NOT PRISONS TOUR ADELANTOOn October 20 the #SchoolsNotPrisons arts and music festival will travel to Adelanto. Artists and advocates will join forces to raise awareness about the immigrant prison system, share the stories of people harmed by inhumane prison conditions, and advocate for prisons to be replaced by community-based solutions that allow people to remain healthy and safe, with their families, while awaiting the outcome of their immigration cases.  FREE, ALL AGES.  Adelanto Stadium, 12000 Stadium Way, 5-10 p.m.  Facebook Event page here.   CARPOOL FROM JOSHUA TREE FORMING: email tranvancori@protonmail.com if you’d like to join.

LOTS OF OPPPORTUNITES FOR CONGRESSIONAL ACTION THIS WEEK, INDIVISIBLES!  Note:  This week the Senate is back in session while the House is in recess.

NO WAR WITH IRAN:  Stop Trump From Ripping Up the Iran Deal.  Trump moved closer to war with Iran by announcing he would decertify the Iran nuclear deal.  This puts us all in immediate danger, but Congress can stop it.  See the new Indivisible resource here, then call Senators Feinstein and Harris and ask them to commit not to re-impose sanctions and take us to war with Iran.  Sample call script here.

TRUMP TAX SCAM:  The Focus Moves To the Senate.  Just as they did with health care, Senate Republicans are attempting to ram through tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires by passing a budget resolution that creates the “rules” for reconciliation (50 Senate votes, plus the Vice President as the tie-breaker). They’ve already passed the bill out of the House and appropriate Senate Committees, teeing up a full vote on the budget resolution. This is the first step in passing the Trump Tax Scam and… we can beat them. Again.  Get the basics here, then call Senators Feinstein and Harris and ask them to oppose Trump’s giveaway to the wealthy budgeted on the backs of middle class families.  Sample call script here.

REPEAL BY EXECUTIVE ORDER:  Congress Must Pass A Bipartisan Health Care Stabilization Bill!  Last Thursday, Trump took two executive actions in his attempt to sabotage the Affordable Care Act and do some of what Senate Republicans were unable to do (twice). First, he issued an executive order designed to siphon healthy people out of the regular insurance markets; then, he ordered that the administration stop making payments to insurers that they depend on to provide financial assistance to low-income consumers. Both actions will result in higher premiums and more uninsured Americans…and will cost taxpayers more than just making sure people can get coverage.  Let’s #StoptheSabotage!  Use the Indivisible explainer to get the story, then tell Senators Feinstein and Harris that they must support a bill to protect consumers and stabilize insurance markets.  Sample call script here.

NO MUSLIM BAN EVER:  Tonight at 5:30 Indivisible Facebook Live will discuss the Muslim Ban 3.0 and how you can stand up to declare No Muslim Ban Ever as part of a national effort this week.  Monday Oct. 16 at 5:30 p.m.

NORTH BAY WILDFIRES:  Thousands of firefighters are battling more than 20 wildfires in Northern California. People have lost their homes and livelihoods. And dozens of people have lost their lives. Read Indivisible Sonoma County’s blog post with action alerts and ways you can get involved.  And you can contribute to the North Bay Fire Relief fund to support those affected by the wildfires.

DACA:  IMB Rallies In Support Of The DREAMers!  Read the update from the IMB Immigration Team, with report-backs from our rally in Joshua Tree on Oct. 6 and also the DACA rally at UC Irvine where members of IMB listened to Senator Kamala Harris!  En Español aqui!

MORE ON ADELANTO AND THE STRUGGLE FOR BOND HEARING RIGHTS:   The Supreme Court is hearing a case securing bond hearing rights for persons in deportation proceedings.  Learn about the important implications of this case from a man who came to this country from South Korea when he was six years old and was locked up in Adelanto as an adult after a traffic infraction.  And remember, the CLUE Justice Adelanto Bond Fund still needs contributions to gain the liberation of the remaining hunger-strikers –  please help, and please spread the word!

HATE-FREE JOSHUA TREE COMING UP NOVEMBER 1:  Join Ted Quinn and others for Joshua Tree is a Hate-Free Zone: 20th Anniversary Reaffirmation.

DID YOU GET YOUR CHECK FROM GEORGE SOROS YET?  Indivisible co-founders Leah Greenberg and Ezra Levin discuss the recent decision to accept funding from the Open Society Foundations (OSF).

NONVIOLENT ORGANIZING:  We’re thrilled that an IMB member has been accepted into the James Lawson Institute’s upcoming training, “Organizing Resistance:  Employing Nonviolent Direct Action In The 21st Century, in Los Angeles.  The James Lawson Institute draws lessons from past and present civil resistance movements around the world to discern what kinds of strategies, tactics and practices are effective for people organizing movements and waging civil resistance campaigns.  James Lawson was an important strategist in the U.S. Civil Rights Movement.  We’re looking forward to benefiting from the lessons our member brings back to the desert!

UPDATE: 10/13/2017

LOCATION CHANGE:  “THIS IS OUR FLAG” RALLY MOVED TO CORNER OF HWY 247 AND HWY 62.

The Morongo Basin Democratic Club sends the following update regarding their rally on October 14:

“’This is our Flag’ the rally will be this Saturday from 4:00 – 6:00 pm. at the corner of Old Woman Springs Road and the Hwy !  Members of the board determined that the JT location would be too crowded given the amount of foot and road traffic expected by the Art Tours, Open Studios and other events.

THE BEST WAY TO RESIST THE TRUMP AGENDA TODAYBecome the co-coordinator for the IMB voter registration team!   We have volunteers ready to start registering and Kit is already at work organizing the effort, but she needs a partner to share team leadership.  You’ll help schedule trainings and registration opportunities.  Prior experience with registration is NOT needed.  If you can help please respond to indivisible@indivisiblemb.org.  Let’s make sure everyone has an opportunity to vote!

NOTE:  Monday is Columbus Day (Indigenous Peoples Day) and federal offices may be closed.  Also, the Senate is on recess this week and the House is on recess next week.

DISASTER FUNDING:   Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands still need our help. It’s been more than two weeks since Hurricane Maria made landfall and Congress still has not authorized a disaster relief package for the people (and U.S. citizens!) of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Many are living in dire conditions without clean drinking water and electricity. And Trump’s FEMA department is trying to cover up their political mess by removing important statistics about clean drinking water and electricity from their website. Read this explainer, then ask Rep. Paul Cook to provide a disaster relief package for the victims of Hurricane Maria.

CONGRESS MUST FUND CHIP:   Nine million children rely on the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), a federal-state partnership where the federal government provides most — or in some cases, all — of the funding necessary to cover uninsured children. No one thought Congress would let CHIP funding expire on September 30, but the Republicans were so busy trying to repeal Obamacare and that’s exactly what happened.  California is among the states projected to run out of federal CHIP funds before the end of this year.  Call Rep. Paul Cook and demand he pass a clean CHIP reauthorization bill, using these sample call scripts.

THE TRUMP TAX SCAM IS IN FULL SWING:  On Thursday, the House passed a budget resolution to pave the way for Trump’s Tax Scam.  Shortly thereafter, the Senate Budget Committee passed their version of a budget resolution, teeing up a full vote on the Senate floor later in October. The budget resolution is the first step in passing the Trump Tax Scam.

DACA:  Thank you to all who joined the rally for the DREAMers in Joshua Tree last Friday; we’ll have a report-back and pictures soon!   Like Indivisibles across the country, we rallied to protest the Trump Administration’s announcement that they were ending an Obama-era executive order that provided 760,000 immigrant youth the opportunity to work and earn a living, live out their dreams, and live without the threat of deportation. Now, it’s time for Rep. Paul Cook to do the right thing and support our DREAMers!  Call and tell him we need a clean #DreamActNow.  Make it easy with this sample call script.

ADELANTO:   Julio and Isaac, two of the hunger-strikers who have been released from Adelanto Detention Center, were featured on KPIX TV.  We are proud to see IMB listed as part of the coalition that helped free them.  The CLUE Justice Adelanto Bond Fund still needs contributions to gain the liberation of the remaining hunger-strikers –  please help, and please spread the word!

BELLICOSE RHETORIC:  Remind Rep. Paul Cook of the concrete actions he can take if he’s really worried about “bellicose rhetoric” and North Korea.

“THIS IS OUR FLAG” RALLY IN JOSHUA TREE OCT. 14:  The Morongo Basin Democratic Club is sponsoring a “This Is Our Flag” rally in JT on Oct. 14 from 4-6 p.m. at Park Blvd. and Hwy 62.   The club hopes to have a lot of flags to wave and “respectfully requests that signs speak only to issues in a positive way.”  The MB Dems state that the rally is “a second step in response to our Confederate Flag letter. We are making a positive statement about which flag belongs on display in the U.S. and the Basin of course.”

INDIVISIBLES ON THE OPINION PAGE:  IMB members continue to make resistance visible on the pages of the Hi-Desert Star.  See Kit’s Soapbox on the meaning of a flag  and Jill’s letter on healthcare as a right or a privilege.  Submit your own letter to the editor with help from the IMB website.

RALLY TO SUPPORT DREAMers IN JOSHUA TREEOn Friday October 6, ask Rep. Paul Cook to support the DREAM Act and keep DACA youth in the USA, their home!  5 to 6:30 pm at Highway 62 and Park Boulevard.  Bring your signs and spread the word!  Pssst:  Rumor has it the Trump Chicken might fly in for the occasion!  Facebook Event page here – please share!  Learn more about DACA and the DREAM Act here.

ACTION MEETING – this Tuesday October 3 at 6 pm!    Register here.  New location in Joshua Tree!

YOU #KILLEDTHEBILL!  Thanks to everyone who called/faxed/emailed/stood up against TrumpCare!  We did it – together!  See pictures of your fellow Indivisibles across the nation in an inspiring video from Indivisible National, and watch Elizabeth Warren and Indivisible co-leader Ezra Levin in last week’s Facebook Live.  Congratulations, Indivisibles!

TAX SCAM:  NOW, THE TAX FIGHT IS ON!  Republicans are already gearing up for the next big fight: Trump’s Tax Plan – Indivisible calls it the Trump Tax Scam.  Here’s the bottom line: these budgets cut critical services and would force deep cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security down the road.  All to give massive tax cuts to the rich and corporations.  The Republicans are, once again, trying to ram this bill through using the budget reconciliation process just like they did with TrumpCare. The first step is the budget resolution.  Here’s what you do:

RELIEF FOR PUERTO RICO:  Congress must pass an emergency relief package for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It is unconscionable that our government has failed to give the people of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands (U.S. Citizens!) the same attention as it did the victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.  Learn more here, then call Rep. Paul Cook and Senators Feinstein and Harris and ask them to provide an emergency relief package for the victims of Hurricane Maria and to permanently rescind the Jones Act, an antiquated law that has made it difficult for supplies to reach the Island of Puerto Rico.

ADELANTO:  Donations to the release fund for the Adelanto hunger strikers and assistance with housing and transportation for those released are still needed!  Please see this post for details.

TRUMP’S FOREIGN POLICY BLUNDERS ARE ENDANGERING US ALL:  With each day in office, Donald Trump actively makes our country less safe. From his tweets to his bluster to his white supremacist policies, Trump poses a risk to us all.  On a weekly basis, Indivisible National reports out the significant ways this Administration is making us less safe.  Here’s this week’s #TrumpThreatLevel:

  • Escalating tensions with North Korea. Trump continued to tweet insults and threats at North Korea, including a threat that North Korea “won’t be around much longer.” North Korea responded by saying it considers these statements to be a “declaration of war.” A war with North Korea would be devastating and completely unnecessary. But instead of diffusing the situation, Trump is making it worse.
  • Slashing Refugees Admitted into U.S. On Wednesday, the Trump administration decided to slash the maximum amount of refugees allowed into the U.S. down to the lowest level in decades. This shows our international partners that we can’t be counted upon to help solve the global refugee crisis, contributes to right-wing fearmongering about refugees, and inflames racial tensions.
  • Expanded Muslim Ban. On Monday, Trump’s administration issued another version of his hateful and unconstitutional Muslim ban, this time with a blatant attempt to escape court scrutiny by throwing in a couple of non-Muslim-majority countries into the list. We’re not fooled: a ban is a ban. The ban emboldening bigots in the U.S. and stokes anti-American sentiment abroad. Join us and our partners on 10/18 to declare: #NoMuslimBanEver.

September 29, 2017

WHAT:   Hey Paul Cook! Support our DREAMers!
WHEN:  5:00-6:30 pm, Friday, October 6, 2017
WHERE:  Highway 62 and Park Boulevard, Joshua Tree, CA
WHY:     Ask Paul Cook to support the DREAM Act and keep DACA youth in the USA, their home!

More info at the Action Meeting on Tuesday, October 3 (did you register yet?) but get started now making a sign so we can stand up together for all members of our community!

The bipartisan DREAM Act is legislation that will provide a path to citizenship for young people who were brought to the US as children. These young people have already passed background checks, and are currently in the military, in school and/or working. When President Trump rescinded DACA, he set in motion a process that will deport these upstanding people who only want to stay as productive members of society in the only home they’ve known.

Tell Paul Cook that supporting the bipartisan DREAM Act is the right thing to do!

Week of September 24, 2017

SAVE THE DATE:  Next Action meeting Tuesday October 3 – invitation coming soon!

FIVE DAYS LEFT TO KILL TRUMPCARE:   Sept. 30 is the deadline for Republicans to pass their healthcare bill using the reconciliation process. There will be a lot of noise about this bill all week and we’ll likely hear of senators switching their votes in both directions.  Today, the Senate Finance Committee will hold a hearing on Graham-Cassidy in an effort to appease senators who have called for regular order.  This hearing is a sham–we still don’t know what’s in the bill and CBO won’t have time to fully score it.  The vote will likely occur between Wednesday and Friday, and if there is enough public pressure on senators, there’s a chance McConnell will be forced to cancel the vote.  That’s why it’s important to keep up the pressure.  We need to get to Oct 1 before we can rest easy!  Actions you can take to #KillTheBill:

ADELANTO:

  • Some great news:  We’ve now cracked $20,000 in donations for the release fund for the Adelanto hunger strikers!  Members of the IMB Immigration Team continue to assist with housing and transportation for those released.  Your contributions and assistance are needed to sustain this effort!  Please see this post for details.
  • View the video:  A press conference was held Wednesday at the Central American Resource Center in Los Angeles, standing with seven Adelanto hunger-strike leaders now freed and requesting the Attorney General investigate Adelanto Detention Center.  Hear from speakers including released hunger strikers from Haiti and Central America, as well as members of CLUE (Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice) who hold the Adelanto Bond Fund, and others.  Members of IMB Immigration Team were present.  #LiberationNotDetention.

DISASTER RELIEF FOR PUERTO RICO:  Ask Rep. Paul Cook and Senators Feinstein and Harris to immediately pass emergency disaster relief for Puerto Rico.  3.5 million Americans live in Puerto Rico, and right now they need federal support.  Hurricane Maria has devastated the Island, leaving at least ten dead, and millions without power.  Puerto Rico deserves the same immediate federal response that victims of Hurricane Harvey received.  Let’s ask our members of Congress to make sure they get it without delay.

STANDING AND KNEELING AGAINST RACISM:

ACLU’s People Power:  The ACLU’s People Power movement is “going all in on the fight against voter suppression” with a nationwide voting rights campaign.  Locally hosted events are coming up October 1, including in Yucca Valley!

Week of September 17, 2017

TrumpCare is back. REPEAT: TrumpCare is back.

We really hoped we’d never have to say that, but you should know by now that this is the bill that just won’t die. Because of the rules of reconciliation, the special process Republicans are using to jam TrumpCare through the Senate, they only have until September 30 to finish the job of repealing the Affordable Care Act.  The “Graham-Cassidy” TrumpCare bill has already been sent to the Congressional Budget Office for a score — step one in moving the bill forward.  Let’s be clear.  TrumpCare by any other name is still TrumpCare.  Graham-Cassidy destroys Medicaid as we know it, hurts people with pre-existing conditions, and takes away the funding that helps people afford insurance. This bill also cuts federal funding to states for healthcare costs.  It then creates “block grants” to give states much less money than they need and has no accountability that the money will actually help people get affordable health care.  And to top it off?  Every. Last. Dollar. Disappears. After. 2026.  Learn more about Graham-Cassidy here, then:

PROTECT PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES:   Defeat H.R. 620!  Last week, the House Judiciary Committee approved a bill that “would dramatically increase the burden on any person with a disability who seeks to vindicate their rights” by changing the Americans With Disabilities Act to make it harder for people with disabilities to seek justice.  And the bill could be coming to a vote on the House floor soon.  Right now, under the ADA, businesses open to the public are required to make themselves accessible to people with disabilities (think: hospitals, restaurants, and hotels).  If they don’t, a person with disabilities can take them to court or file a complaint with U.S. Department of Justice. That all changes under this horrible bill.  Tell Rep. Paul Cook that, should H.R. 620 come to the floor, you expect him to protect people with disabilities and vote no.

ADELANTO:

  • The good news:  Two more hunger-strikers are released!  Charles and Ceus have joined Julio, Civile, and Isaac on the outside.  Thank you for your contributions – now let’s bring the rest of the strikers home!
  • The need: The strikers that are released need support from all of us – money for basics, transportation volunteers, host families – everything.  How can you help?  See an early assessment of the needs here, and we’ll provide an update on the situation later today.   Let’s all support the IMB Immigration Team and the other members of the coalition by pitching in any way we can.  Contact us with your donations or offers or for details on how you can help.

DACA:  Keep calling for a clean DREAM Act.  Democratic Leaders Pelosi and Schumer continue to cultivate a cozy relationship with Trump. This week, they announced a deal (to make a deal) on the DREAM Act with Trump. With little information about what may have been agreed to, there is risk that DREAMers are being used as bargaining chips to expand Trump’s mass deportation machine.  Learn more here, then:

  • Tell Rep. Cook and Senators Feinstein and Harris to not settle for anything but a “clean” DREAM Act.
  • Rep. Paul Cook makes a statement on DACA in the Victor Valley Daily Press, and the paper also takes a position.  Push back with a letter to the editor of the Press, and send a copy to other 8th District papers – find easy links to submit your letters here.

Week of September 10, 2017

ACTION MEETING TOMORROW, TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 12!  Let’s come together, make our plans, and take action!  Register here.

Yes, it’s a lot, but don’t be overwhelmed.  Get the big picture on what’s happening in Congress this month by tuning in to Facebook Live on Monday 9/11 at 5:30 pm.  Join Indivisible Policy Director Angel Padilla and others from the National team to talk about the latest on the Dream Act, the Budget, tax reform, and more.  Bring all your questions about what’s next for Congress this month and what you and your group can be doing to hold them accountable.

STAND INDIVISIBLE WITH THE DREAMERS!

If you do one thing this week. it needs to be this: stand up and defend 800,000 DACA recipients.  Last week, Democrats missed a critical opportunity to protect Dreamers. Democratic leaders cut a big deal with Donald Trump to fund the government. Their deal with Trump provides badly-need funding for disaster relief for Hurricane Harvey, and it will temporarily raise the debt ceiling and fund the government for three months. All of these items are must-pass legislation, and all of them were going to require Democratic support – so it was a great opportunity to demand that the Dream Act be included. But the final deal didn’t have anything for Dreamers.  Dems gave up their leverage. Democrats are celebrating this deal because it forces Republicans to take a series of politically costly votes twice – in September and December. But the reality is that this deal does nothing to protect the 800,000 youth whose lives have been thrown into jeopardy by Trump’s order. Democrats had leverage, and they gave it up for some quick political points.  See the statement with United We Dream and the National Immigration Law Center right here, and if anybody questions this analysis, point out that the groups directly representing the Dreamers under threat are raising these same concerns. We stand indivisible with the Dreamers.

  • Tell Rep. Cook and Senators Feinstein and Harris that you want the Dream Act attached to every must-pass bill in Congress using this updated script.
  • “If you only stand up for your own issue, you wait your turn to lose.” On Friday, Indivisible Co-Executive Director Ezra Levin joined United We Dream, U.S. Reps. Gutierrez, Grijalva, and Correa, and others, including DACA recipients, to speak about the need to pass a clean Dream Act now. You can watch his remarks here.
  • Nearly 400 people turned out for a beautiful, inspiring, and noisy rally in defense of DACA in San Bernardino last week, including members of IMB, in front of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security building.  Read about it in the Inland Empire Community News and the SB Sun.

STAND UP FOR IMMIGRANTS AND OPPOSE H.R. 3697: The House is expected to vote this Tuesday on a bill that criminalizes immigrants, including those fleeing gang violence, and allows more of them to be detained and deported. It also affects vulnerable populations such as asylum seekers, TPS holders, and unaccompanied children. Tell Rep. Paul Cook to vote no on H.R. 3697, the Criminal Alien Gang Member Removal Act.

OPPOSE THE BUDGET RESOLUTION: The budget resolution is expected on the House floor in two weeks and is step one of two in passing the Trump Tax Scam. The version moving through the House is totally appalling: it makes deep cuts to Medicaid and SNAP and voucherizes Medicare, all to give more funding to the Pentagon. It also sets up the special reconciliation process that Republicans plan to use to jam the Trump Tax Scam through the Senate, just like TrumpCare. Now is the time to start making our calls – this baby could be on the floor in two weeks!  Get the background and sample scripts here, then:

STAND UP TO TRUMP ON NORTH KOREA:  Trump is still beating the drum for war with North Korea. Instead of exploring rational and strategic diplomacy in the face of the rogue nation’s nuclear weapons tests, the administration has talked about a “massive military response” and said that North Korea is “begging for war.” The last thing we need when it comes to North Korea is an unstable Trump tweeting threats.  And yet our Congressman Paul Cook said in July that he “would support the use of military options, if they were deemed necessary by President Trump,” according to the Victorville Daily Press.  Let’s tell Rep. Cook to reconsider his irresponsible position and ask Senators Feinstein and Harris to speak out and deny Trump any authorization for war with North Korea. The stakes are too high for Congress to stay silent (because we know Trump won’t) – see these key points to remember, and don’t let them off the hook.

LATEST ON CADIZ WATER PROJECT:  Cadiz is making robo calls to Californians lauding Lara and DeLeon as champions of the environment, water, and jobs for stopping AB 1000.  It’s time to turn up the desert heat!  The legislative session does not end until September 15th and we have information that indicates AB1000 still has a chance to move forward.  Please call Senators Kevin DeLeon and Ricardo Lara and urge them to support and move the bill forward, and ask your friends to call, too!  Bonus: Tell DeLeon you won’t support him for Lt Governor if he kills this bill.  Call them out on social media too, especially Twitter.

Week of September 3, 2017

SEPTEMBER ACTION MEETING:  Tuesday evening, Sept. 12 – watch for the announcement!

DEFEND DACAMENTED YOUTH:  We will not stand idly by while this White House tramples on the civil rights of members of our communities!  News broke this weekend that Trump will likely announce the elimination of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. This program has provided relief from deportation to 800,000 young immigrants who came to the U.S. as children, who passed rigorous background checks, who paid a fee, and who met several other requirements. Trump has affirmed that he has no regard for the promise of safety made to immigrant youth by our government five years ago. But let’s be clear: it is on Speaker Ryan and Congress to pass a permanent legislative fix. Many Republicans have voiced their support of DREAMers. Now it’s time to make sure their actions match their words. It’s not enough for our legislators to disapprove of the decision. Words are empty if not followed up with immediate, decisive action.  Learn more here, then:

URGENT ON CADIZ:  Don’t give up on AB1000 yet! Senators DeLeon and Lara held AB1000 from receiving a vote this past Friday, despite strong support from the Governor and Lieutenant Governor. BUT, the legislative session does not end until September 15th and we have information that indicates AB1000 still has a chance to move forward. Please call Senators Kevin DeLeon and Ricardo Lara and urge them to support and move the bill forward.  Bonus: Tell DeLeon you won’t support him for Lt Governor if he kills this bill. Call them out on social media too, especially Twitter.  Get the background and contact info hereAnd see IMB member Sara L. and her little girl rallying at the LA office of de Leon in the pages of USA Today!

FIGHT THE REPUBLICAN TAX SCAM: As we saw in the health care fight, what Republicans really care about are massive tax cuts for the wealthy, at the expense of critical programs that American families depend on, like Medicaid. They failed to get it done through their health care bill, but they’re hoping they can trick the public into supporting their tax scam by calling it “tax reform”. Don’t be fooled — we need to ramp up our resistance to Trump’s Tax Scam starting this week.

RESPOND TO HURRICANE HARVEY:  The communities affected by Hurricane Harvey need immediate disaster aid and we could see a package as early as Wednesday. Make sure Rep. Paul Cook and Senators Harris and Feinstein are working to provide it.  Find out just what to push for here.  Then, see a special mailer from our fellows at Indivisible Houston.

THREE HUNGER-STRIKERS RELEASED FROM ADELANTO:  Meet Isaac, Julio, and Civile, released from Adelanto Detention Center with contributions from you and others.  Learn how you can help gain the release of the remaining strikers

WHO WILL DEFEND OUR MONUMENTS:  Congressman Paul Cook defended his attack on our desert Monuments in the Victor Valley Press.  Now the original desert defender Minerva Hoyt comes back from the dead to take him to task.  Add your own comments to Rep. Cook’s Facebook page.

YUCAIPA SAYS NO TO HATE:  Indivisible Yucaipa joined a spirited crowd in the Yucaipa United Against Hate Rally on August 26, a “peaceful and positive counter protest rally in response to White Supremacists organization of a protest and march in our Yucaipa Streets”.  The rally made ABC News!

SANCTUARY CITY #2!  Congratulations to Coachella on becoming the second Sanctuary City in the Coachella Valley, and a mighty thank you to our sister group Courageous Resistance Palm Springs and Other Desert Cities and the many relentless activists in the low desert!  Sí se puede!

RESISTANCE IN THE PRESS:   The Hi-Desert Star posts an editorial in response to Charlottesville, and readers across the Basin get their letters in.   See our round-up here.  And write your own letter to the editor with the tools on our Use the Press page.

WE ARE INDIVISIBLE:  Finally, the national press reflects on the significance of Indivisible:

  • Politico names Indivisible co-directors Leah Greenberg and Ezra Levin as #2 in their annual 50 Political Ideas.
  • A piece on Bill Moyer’s website looks at the growth, variety, and potential of our many Indivisibles.

Urgent Call for Thursday, 31 Aug re Cadiz – Support California A.B. 1000:  Protect California’s Precious Desert Water Resources!

From the National Parks Conservation Association:

Imagine pumping 16 billion gallons of water from the Mojave Desert for export and sale each year! Unfortunately, the Cadiz, Inc. water mining project, which would starve the desert of much needed resources, is proceeding without the required environmental review. This is the Trump administration’s plan. Fortunately, a solution exists to stop it.

Please call your California state legislators today and tell them to support A.B. 1000, which safeguards our desert parks, monuments and wildlife!

Note: this action alert is restricted to residents of California.

Script: I urge you to support Assemblymember Laura Friedman’s bill, A.B. 1000, which will safeguard groundwater in California’s Mojave Desert that sustains our public lands including Mojave National Preserve and wildlife. This legislation would help to ensure our national parks, monuments, wilderness areas and state lands remain resilient in the face of climate change.

The Trump administration is considering removing protections for California’s national monuments and advancing the Cadiz Water Project, an environmentally disastrous groundwater extraction proposal in the region. A.B. 1000 provides a safeguard for California and its significant natural and cultural desert resources. Please support this bill and help protect our parks, monuments and water. Thank you for your consideration.

CADIZ WATER PROJECT:  There will be an Informational Meeting on the Cadiz Water Project at the Pioneertown Mountains Preserve tomorrow! Tuesday, August 29, at 6:30.  Reservations required; call (760) 369-7105 to save a spot.  Bring a folding chair.

TEXAS: IN DISTRESS! Did you know that the Indivisible movement began in Texas? Austin, to be exact. Hurricane Harvey and its record-shattering rainfall are centered in the Houston area, but the devastation is wide-spread and Austin saw damage as well. The Houston Chronicle has a list of local and national organizations that can use your donations, if you’d like to help our brothers and sisters in the Lone Star State.

CONGRESSMAN COOK, WE ARE STILL WAITING: TAKE A STAND!  Do you defend Trump’s words, or disavow them?

The National news has moved along, but we are still seeing white supremacists rallying in our district.  The Hi-Desert Star agrees with us that Racism is Repugnant, but they, too, stop short of demanding that our Representative, Paul Cook, must disavow President Trump’s words blaming both sides for the violence that took one woman’s life in Charlottesville.  Call Rep. Cook* and demand he take a stand, disavow Trump’s words, and vote to censure the president – or tell you why he won’t!

* You can also send him a fax, or leave a comment on his Facebook page!

REAL HELP FOR THE HUNGER-STRIKERS IN ADELANTO:  Good news! The Central American hunger-strikers at Adelanto Detention Facility (and the 20 Haitian detainees who joined the hunger strike in solidarity) have started attending hearings, where their bail amounts are being lowered by judges from the stratospheric amounts set by ICE.  THERE’S STILL AN OPPORTUNITY TO HELP THEM meet bail with a donation!  A coalition of interested organizations has formed to raise funds so these men can get out of jail and join their families, where they will be able to recuperate from detention and have easier access to legal counsel to prepare for their hearings.  Already raised: more than $9,000 – enough to bring home three detainees!  Please help bring all the detainees home by considering a donation to the Adelanto Bond Fund and by getting the word out.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT THE DREAMERS: The DACA program is constantly, tragically, rumored to be joining many of President Obama’s policies in President Trump’s overflowing trash can. There are 800,000 undocumented immigrants, brought to this country as children, who are seeking a way to remain in the only home they know, as part of our communities. Let Paul Cook know that we’re going to stand up for our immigrant brothers and sisters!

Week of August 20, 2017

THE MORONGO BASIN STANDS WITH CHARLOTTESVILLE:  If you joined us in Joshua Tree the evening of August 13 for the Indivisible Morongo Basin Vigil for Charlottesville, you know that it was an incredible, inspiring time shared with over 100 warm and spirited people, gathering on short notice to mourn the tragic and shocking losses that occurred in Charlottesville that weekend.  Read about it and see pictures on our blog, and pick up a copy of the August 17 Hi-Desert Star!

CONGRESSMAN COOK, TAKE A STAND:  Do you defend Trump’s words, or disavow them?

Rep. Paul Cook must take a stand!  Does he stand with Donald Trump as he defends neo-Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan, or does he not?  Does he agree with Trump that “very fine people” would march with Nazis and the KKK, armed to the teeth, carrying torches, flying swastikas and Confederate flags, chanting hate, and menacing students, a church, and a synagogue?  Does he agree with the president that the people who defied the white supremacists in Charlottesville are no better than the Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan?  Will Rep. Cook defend Trump’s words?  Or will he stand with those who honor the memory of the thousands of American soldiers who died to defeat Nazism and to end the subjugation of African-Americans, and repudiate Trump’s statements?  Which will it be?  Call Rep. Cook* and demand he take a stand, disavow Trump’s words, and vote to censure the president – or tell you why he won’t!

* You can also send him a fax, or leave a comment on his Facebook page!

More actions to take against hate:

  • Stand Indivisible against white supremacy with new resources from Indivisible National.
  • Join Indivisible National for an important Facebook Live on racial justice and allyship. You can join right from their Facebook page on Monday at 8:30 pm ET.

AND:  now YOU CAN HELP THEM meet bail with a donation!  A coalition of interested organizations has formed to raise funds so these men can get out of jail and join their families, where they will be able to recuperate from detention and have easier access to legal counsel to prepare for their hearings.  Already raised:  nearly $5,000 – enough to bring home two detainees!  Please help bring all the detainees home by considering a donation to the Adelanto Bond Fund and by getting the word out.

DEFEND OUR DESERT MONUMENTS!

The Sand to Snow National Monument appears to be safe, but Mojave Trails Monument is not!  Our Environmental Issues Team is asking you to call Rep. Paul Cook and tell him not to resize Mojave Trails and Castle Mountains National MonumentsGet the back-story here, then call or fax Rep. Cook!  Here’s a sample script:

Representative Cook, you have ignored your constituents by refusing to hold town hall meetings. Your proposal to reduce the size of Mojave Trails and Castle Mountains National Monuments even before the public comment period was closed is just another example of your unwillingness to represent us or explain your actions. This is unacceptable and I firmly oppose your support of this Administration in its efforts to shrink lawfully created National Monuments.

Plus:  VIRTUAL RALLY FOR THE MOJAVE MONUMENTS

Sand to Snow may be off the chopping block, but with redoubled threats to Mojave Trails and Castle Mountains, our Mojave Monuments need us now more than ever.  Join us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for our very first virtual rally for the Mojave Monuments! We will be posting stories, graphics, and calls to action for you to share with your friends. Use your voice to spread the word about the Mojave Monuments from the comfort of your computer.”  Tuesday August 22, 9 am to 5 pm.  Hosted by Mojave Desert Land Trust.

CADIZ WATER PROJECT:  There will be an Informational Meeting on the Cadiz Water Project at the Pioneertown Mountains Preserve on Tuesday, August 29, at 6:30.  Reservations required; call (760) 369-7105 to save a spot.  Bring a folding chair.

STANDING UP FOR DACAMENTED YOUTH!   Last week Indivisibles around the nation stood up for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA; read about them on our blog.  And please continue to take the future of the DACAmented youth out of Trump’s hands by urging Senators Feinstein and Harris and Congressman Paul Cook to co-sponsor the bipartisan DREAM Act — S.1615 and H.R. 3591 (learn more about DACA and these bills here).

Week of August 13, 2017

What a week!  There’s a lot to respond to, Indivisibles; make yourselves heard!

WE STAND WITH CHARLOTTESVILLE!

Every single member of Congress should be publicly outraged at the Charlottesville attack, and should recognize and condemn it as an act of domestic terrorism–something Donald Trump refuses to do. But that isn’t enough. They need to do more, starting with demanding that Donald Trump fire members of his staff that are members of the alt-right movement. Indivisible has a new resource to help us make sure our Senators and especially Congressman Paul Cook are doing more to respond to Charlottesville. Learn more here, then call and tell them they need to:

  1. Demand that Trump disavow white nationalism and fire white nationalists on his staff;
  2. Restore funding for programs designed to combat white nationalism (that Trump wants to defund); and
  3. Defund Trump’s hateful, anti-immigrant agenda that is itself terrorizing our communities, and protect our immigrant friends and neighbors from deportation: see our Immigration action below on how to do this.

AND SPECIAL FOR REP. PAUL COOK:  Demand Rep. Cook PUBLICALLY DISAVOW white nationalism, neo-Nazis, skinheads, and the KKK, and CONDEMN THE ACT OF TERRORISM that occurred in Charlottesville!

STAND UP WITH IMMIGRANTS on Tuesday, August 15th

Tuesday is the fifth anniversary of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, a program that has provided safe harbor to live and work in our communities for 800,000 Americans who arrived in the U.S. as children. With Trump in office, these young people are facing the unthinkable prospect of being ripped from their homes and shoved into the deportation pipelineOn Tuesday, August 15, use your constituent power to take the future of the DACAmented youth out of Trump’s hands, by urging your members of Congress to co-sponsor the bipartisan DREAM Act — S.1615 and H.R. 3591 (learn more about DACA and these bills here):

  • Call Senators Feinstein and Harris and tell them to co-sponsor the bipartisan Durbin-Graham “DREAM Act” (S. 1615) to create a legislative fix to the predicament of these young Americans, and take their future out of Trump’s hands.
  • Call Rep. Paul Cook and tell him to co-sponsor Rep. Gutierrez’s American Hope Act (H.R. 3591) give those with DACA and others who arrived in the United States as children a path to permanent legal status and eventual citizenship.
  • Do more:  Defund Trump’s massive deportation machine!
  • Learn more:  Tune in to a special Facebook Live tonight (Monday, Aug 14) at 5:30 pm PT. Special guests from United We Dream to talk with Indivisible policy staff about DACA and other immigration priorities for recess, including how you can take action now.

OPPOSE TRUMP’S NORTH KOREA ESCALATION

With Trump turning to his favorite medium—Twitter—to dictate his reckless, inflammatory doctrine on North Korea policy, we know you’re looking for answers from our members of Congress on how we can de-escalate the situation.  We need measured leadership to avoid a showdown with North Korea, leadership that leverages every diplomatic tool we have. Tell Senators Feinstein and Harris and Rep. Paul Cook to do everything they can to stop Trump from leading us closer to a nuclear catastrophe. Find the questions to ask here.

ADELANTO IN THE HEADLINES:  The deadly situation at the Adelanto Detention Facility, a focus of our Immigration Issues Team, was on the front page of the Los Angeles Times this week.

NEW ON THE WEBSITE:  “KNOW YOUR RIGHTS”  The “Know Your Rights” pamphlet tells how to protect oneself from immigration raids.  IMB now has the pamphlet on our website, in English and in Spanish, with links to printable pdfs. Thank you to the Immigration Issues Team!

WHY DID THE CHICKEN CROSS THE ROAD?  The inflatable Trump chicken that has appeared at local rallies has made the San Bernardino Sun.  The chicken flew in to our April “Where Is Paul Cook?” townhall in Victorville and to healthcare rallies at Rep. Cook’s offices in Yucaipa and Apple Valley.  Thank you, Steve Walker and Indivisible San Bernardino, for sharing the fun with District 8!

VIGIL FOR CHARLOTTESVILLE:  Join us to mourn and to stand in solidarity with those who stand up against hate.

7 pm, Sunday, August 13

Week of August 6, 2017

REP. PAUL COOK IS HOME FOR THE AUGUST RECESS.  LET’S GET UNDER HIS SKIN.

IN THE PAPERS:  Indivisible National has a new guide to writing letters to the editor (LTE) that really get attention. They have some great tips for getting under your congressman’s skin, including:

  • Questioning their brand.
  • Knowing their record.
  • Calling them out-of-touch with the district.
  • Showing them you have a long memory.
  • Putting your letter in local terms…and putting them on the spot.
  • Defying stereotypes.

Pair up National’s advice with the resources and links to our local papers on the IMB website Use the Press page – including help from our LTE mentors!

ON THE RADIO:  Here in the Basin you can join the discussion on the Up Close Show on 107.7 FM every Friday from 10-11 a.m.  Some weeks the show has a featured guest and topic, but many weeks the forum is open to discuss whatever is on your mind.  Call in live at 760-366-8471, or you can even direct your questions and letters to Gary Daigneault in advance by emailing him at z1077fm@gmail.com.

ON FACEBOOK:  Call Rep. Cook to account on his Facebook page.  Been blocked from commenting?  Let us know!  A Federal court has ruled public officials cannot block social media users because of their criticism.

THE PRIORITIES:  Know Them, Use Them, Win.

Indivisible National has identified the policy priorities for this month and has provided excellent up-to-date toolkits on each to help you get the word out confidently and effectively:

CREATIVE ACTION:  Indivisible National also recommends Greenpeace Summer of Resistance Non Violent Direct Action trainings.  Although there are no trainings in our area, you can get a taste with the Summer of Resistance Non-violent Direct Action Training Webcast.  Start thinking of ideas for our Action Meeting in September!

WHAT YOU’VE DONE:  Take a second and recognize everything you’ve accomplished these past few months. We’re now SEVEN MONTHS into this Congress, and they are having a helluva time getting any of their cruel, plutocratic, and anti-democratic agenda enacted. They just left D.C. for a month of congressional recess “Exhausted, Unsuccessful and Frustrated.” Local pressure by Indivisibles all across the country did that. You did that.  Thank you!

Week of July 30, 2017

CELEBRATE!  This was a huge win.  And every single one of you own it.  It’s time to step back and notice the importance of what we’ve done:

“With the defeat of TrumpCare in the Senate this week, you and your fellow Indivisibles have demonstrated an awe-inspiring amount of constituent power. This week was an incredible testament to the work you all have done together to get us to this place.

“Now, because of your sustained, organized pressure, members of Congress (MoCs) are on notice that they have to think about their constituents. MoC’s recognize your power, and they fear it. And how they talk, how they act, all flows from that….

“This was a win from every district, made up of the work of every group. You were the power that gave Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and the Democrats the spine to withhold consent. And you were the ones who framed the entire conversation, again and again, making each successive version of the bill politically toxic. You were the ones who made it so that every single member of the Senate had to reckon with real pressure, many of them for the first time. You were the ones who made this thing so toxic that McCain saw the hero opportunity. That pressure, that framing, that relentless force from every corner of the country was what made this win possible. This took all of us.

“There are more fights to come. Zombie TrumpCare could be dead or could be back in the not-too-distant future. But this was a huge win. And every single one of you own it.”

Read this inspiring assessment of the importance of our movement and your work from the leaders at Indivisible Guide National.  Then take a minute.  Go for a walk, hug your family, relax.  Reflect on how much power you have.  Then get ready for August recess!

WHAT’S NEXT?  Come to Tuesday’s ACTION MEETING, and let’s make plans for August Congressional Recess and the next phase of resistance.  REGISTER HEREIndivisible National has a new August Recess Toolkit with lots of ideas.  And remember to come early (5:30) if you want to participate in free voter-registration training.

ADELANTO DETENTION CENTER:  Read our new blog post to learn more about abuse of immigrants at this for-profit facility in the high desert.  And see our Immigration Issues page for the latest updates on how our members and others have been responding to shut it down.

COOL ACTION IN THE SUMMER HEAT:  It’s hot out!  But you can still strike a blow for the resistance:  Write a letter to the editor without having to leave your living room!  Whatever your latest issue with the Trump Administration (and there’s plenty!), you can find resources for getting your argument out on the IMB Use the Press webpage – including links to District newspapers and to tips on writing an effective letter.

REGISTER HERE, and invite your friends!  Everyone is needed if we’re going to stop this craziness!

It’s going to be a busy week in Washington, with several important votes in both the Senate and the House.  Some votes may come as early as Tuesday.  Your Senators and Congressman need to know where you stand on these bills, and we’ve broken the issues down for you below.  Call, fax, email, but make sure they HEAR FROM YOU.

STAND UP FOR IMMIGRANTS

  1. Oppose any budget that finances Trump’s mass deportation agenda.  Congress could vote on a spending bill as early as Tuesday that includes $1.6 billion for Trump’s border wall.  Contact Rep. Cook today and let him know that no budget that includes increases to Trump’s deportation force or any funding for Trump’s mass deportation agenda should get his support, even if that means withholding the votes needed to avert a government shutdown. Tell him you want a federal budget that invests in families, not fear.  Learn more here.
  2. Tell Senators Feinstein and Harris to support the bipartisan DREAM Act. The DREAM Act would be a permanent legislative fix to the terrifying problem that many young immigrants face: their legal status under Pres. Obama’s DACA program could be ripped away by Trump at any moment.  More info here.

WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH TRUMPCARE?  Who knows!!  But we DO know what we must do about it:  Tell our Senators to oppose any “Motion to Proceed”:

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is trying YET AGAIN to get Zombie TrumpCare over the finish line this week.  And there are some reports that senators are giving in to pressure to advance it, even though no one knows which version of TrumpCare they’ll actually be voting on. Yes, that means they’re voting FOR a bill without knowing WHICH bill it is.  The first procedural vote—the “Motion to Proceed”—may take place as early as Tuesday. If that passes, the Senate will debate the bill until Thursday, and then vote on final passage.  Urge Senators Feinstein and Harris to vote NO on the Motion to Proceed.  Sample script here.

There’s one agency in Washington swimming against the Trump tide, and it needs our help: the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) just restored our ability take collective legal action against big corporate players like Wells Fargo when they break the law.  But Trump’s friends in the House are voting to repeal this important new rule on Tuesday. Tell Congressman Cook to leave the “Arbitration rule” in place and let the CFPB protect your rights without interference.  More information here

ACTION MEETING TUESDAY AUGUST 1:  Register here. Come early for special training:  how to do voter registration!  It’s free, takes 20 minutes, and will equip you to MAKE THE DIFFERENCE as the 2018 election season begins.  Come at 5:30 to join the training.

WE SAID WE’D BE BACK- AND WE WERE!  Read the report-back from “Hands Off Our Healthcare” action at Rep. Paul Cook’s office on Friday, July 21.

Weekly Call to Action – Week of July 16, 2017

CAN YOU BE THERE?  Paul Cook’s Apple Valley Office this Friday!

Indivisibles, did you know you made it onto The Rachel Maddow Show again?!  On Monday July 17, she showed some video we tweeted from the SEIU 2015 Rally to Save Our Health Care at Paul Cook’s Apple Valley office last Friday!  Since we said “We’ll be back!” we really want to keep our word, especially with all the turmoil in D.C. about the Senate so-called health care bill this week. Can you make it?  We’re headed back on Friday, and we’re carpooling, so you don’t even have to drive! It’s a beautiful drive straight up Route 247, and we’re leaving Yucca Valley around 10 a.m. and returning around 2 p.m. Please respond ASAP so we can get a head count!  Bring a sign, or help us hold the IMB banner, and maybe you’ll even get on TV!  Facebook event page here.

TELL REP. COOK:  Reducing Mojave Trails National Monument is NOT OK!

Rep. Paul Cook has signed on to a letter seeking to reduce the size of the Mojave Trails National Monument, among others.  The letter was sent June 30 to Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke and included 16 other Western Caucus congressional representatives.  Call Rep. Cook and tell him you expect him to defend our desert Monuments, not reduce them!  Here’s a sample script from our Relentless Callers team:

“Hi, my name is (name) and I’m a constituent from (city, zip). I’m calling to find out more information about why Paul Cook wants to decrease the size of National Monuments, specifically Mojave Trails and San Gabriel Mountains. How much of the land is he wanting to take away and why? I have serious concerns about decreasing any National Monument because I see how important it is to preserve our land. Please let Representative Cook know that I disagree with any decreases to the size of our National Monuments. Thank you so much.”

TOMORROW:  Town Hall Discussion of SB562 with Senator Ricardo Lara – Healthcare is a human right!

Town hall discussion on single-payer care, its potential impact on the community, and the future of SB 562, the Healthy California Act, featuring SB 562 co-author, Senator Ricardo Lara.  Tomorrow,Thursday July 20, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at Apple Valley Inn, 20601 CA-18 in Apple Valley.  Facebook Event page hereIf interested in carpooling, contact us.

SAVE THE DATE:  Next Action Meeting Tuesday August 1

Weekly Call to Action – Week of July 9, 2017

THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND:  Last Chance to Comment for the Mojave Monuments!   The Department of the Interior’s public comment period for the review of our national monuments ends today (submit your comments here!).  If you haven’t yet, please consider adding your voice to the public record on this. More information here.  Read about the Monuments for All Rally in Indio earlier this month on the IMB Environmental Issues page; en Español aquí.

RALLY TO STOP TRUMPCARE: On the heels of the Save the ACA Rally at Paul Cook’s Yucaipa District Office on July 6 (report here), SEIU Local 2015 is taking it on the road to Apple Valley this Friday July 14. Bring signs! Take pictures and please share with us on facebook and twitter to post. Details here.

SANCTUARY STATE: The California Values Act (SB54) has cleared the Senate and passed through the Judiciary Committee in the Assembly. This is the bill that prohibits local and regional law enforcement agencies from sharing data related to immigration status with Federal law enforcement. Next stop: Appropriations and then a full Assembly vote. Please call your Assembly person and tell them you support this bill. (Chad Mayes, District 42: Sacramento: (916) 319-2042; Rancho Mirage: (760) 346-6342).

CADIZ PROJECT: While you’re calling Sacramento, consider asking your State representatives to support AB 1000, Water Conveyance, to keep Mojave Desert groundwater in the desert, rather than pumping it out. More information here.

AND BACK TO IT, INDIVISIBLES:  TrumpCare is still hanging over us, threatening to saddle us with the bad old days of pre-existing condition exemptions, annual and lifetime caps on care, removing Obamacare’s “Essential Health Benefit” requirements, and allowing insurance companies to charge crazy amounts of money for older people and sicker people.  This still could go either way. Please continue to reach out to friends and families locally and across the nation and urge them to take action. And continue to keep up the pressure on our senators Feinstein and Harris:

  • Thank them for the work they’ve done so far to slow down the process, withhold consent, and speak out on our behalf.
  • Ask them to try to bury TrumpCare in amendments. You can submit an amendment by visiting OurAmendments.org.

KRIS KOBACH KEEPS TRYING TO SUPPRESS VOTES: The ACLU has sued him over it four times (and won every case), but the Trump Administration thinks he has some great ideas.  We disagree! California has refused to provide the voter information the Pence-Kobach Commission requested from every state, but if you have friends and family in a state that hasn’t yet decided, here are some resources to help them oppose it.

WHAT THE HECK JUST HAPPENED?!: We’re not sure either, honestly. But there are a few things we know for sure: Trump blithely taking Putin’s word for it that Russia had nothing to do with election hacking—all evidence to the contrary—gets us pretty riled. Don Jr. changing his story on meetings with Russians is concerning. The head of the Office of Government Ethics, Walter Shaub, admitted defeat in trying to enforce ethics requirements in an administration that appears to presume itself above the law. These are the kinds of things that just might motivate you to write a Letter to the Editor. We can help! with links to publications in the 8th District and some tips, here.

Weekly Call to Action – Week of July 2, 2017

RALLIES TO STOP TRUMPCARE: Monday July 3 at 10:15 a.m., Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Torrance, CA with Senator Kamala Harris! Details here. And Thursday July 6 at 11:00 a.m. at Paul Cook’s Yucaipa District Office. Bring signs! Take pictures and share back to us to post. Details here.

CELEBRATE INDEPENDENCE DAY! We’ve all been working hard since January 20th, and it’s time to kick off our shoes, grab a refreshingly cool beverage, and spend time with friends and family to recharge. It’s the time for barbecues and fireworks displays! And if you should happen to see your Member of Congress at one of the many civic festivities in the District, be resourceful and take the opportunity to ask him to vote NO on the Senate healthcare bill, which will raise premiums for tens of thousands of his constituents and leave tens of thousands more without any health insurance by 2026, which isn’t as far away as it sounds. There are scripts and tips for finding and speaking to your MoC here.

WE STILL HAVE TO WORK TO DEFEAT TRUMPCARE:  Republicans still don’t have the votes, so they’ve delayed it until after the 4th of July recess, but they’re conniving to persuade reluctant GOP Senators to change to Yeas. This still could go either way. Continue to reach out to friends and families locally and across the nation and urge them to take action. New recess scripts and updated talking points are available at recess.indivisibleguide.com.

RELENTLESS CALLERS: Did you know that our Relentless Callers team has made (and logged) almost 1000 calls to our Members of Congress? If writing letters isn’t your style, or you just want a change of pace, join the team to receive a daily email action for calls you can make—even from poolside or the beach!—to make a real difference. Sign up from any page on our website.

THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND:  Rally one more time for Mojave Monuments!   The Department of the Interior’s public comment period for the review of our national monuments ends on July 10 (submit your comments here!).  Mojave Desert Land Trust will be holding a final Desert Defenders rally at their HQ in Joshua Tree to celebrate their campaign, our community, and — of course — our national monuments.  Come for an inspiring evening of music, speakers, and a Q&A session about what we can expect going forward for our desert. Bring 5 friends who have yet to comment so we can show them why we love our public lands.  Friday July 7; 7-9 pm.  60124 29 Palms Highway, Joshua Tree.  More information here.  Read about the Monuments for All Rally in Indio earlier this month on the IMB Environmental Issues page; en Español aquí.

Weekly Call to Action – Week of June 25, 2017

4 DAYS TO DEFEAT TRUMPCARE:  No exaggeration:  We’ve been at this 6 months, and this is the most important week in our fight against TrumpCare. Republicans are planning a vote THIS THURSDAY.  But Republicans still don’t have the votes.  This truly could go either way . This is the moment constituent power was made for.  This is the time to stand up.  Reach out to friends and families locally and across the nation and urge them to take action.  Scripts and other resources specific to their states can be found at TrumpCareTen.  And it’s imperative to keep up the pressure on our senators Feinstein and Harris:

  • Ask them to continue to resist by withholding consent on senate business. Tell them to object!
  • Also ask them to try to bury TrumpCare in amendments. You can submit an amendment by visiting OurAmendments.Org.

TONIGHT’S THE NIGHT!   SB562/Healthy California Act community forum on Monday June 26!

Our Healthcare Team sends this update:

“Healthcare is on the front burner with efforts ranging from save and improve the ACA (Obamacare), repeal and replace with the GOP’s AHCA (Trumpcare) to state efforts to implement their own single payer universal healthcare plan (SB562 in California). It’s a stormy time.

“The California State Assembly has put SB562 on hold for this year, calling the bill “woefully incomplete”. This is not a bad thing. It has been sent back to committee to work out the nuts and bolts of such a massive undertaking. We need to put time and energy into making sure this single payer healthcare coverage for all Californians is done right and that it can be adequately funded.

“Come to our SB562 Community Event on June 26. Keynote speakers will give an overview of single payer healthcare and SB562, local speakers will tell their healthcare stories and Q&A will give time for audience questions and comments.

“We firmly believe that quality, affordable healthcare is right, not a privilege.”

Monday, June 26, 6-7:30 pm.  Yucca Room, Yucca Valley Community Center, 57090 29 Palms Hwy.  Share the Facebook Event and invite your friends!  More info and resources on the IMB Health Care Issues page.

REPORT-BACK:  HUNGER STRIKE RALLY AT ADELANTO DETENTION CENTER.  IMB members attended the rally on Sunday June 25 to protest retaliatory actions against detainees by the for-profit facility.  In apparent response to the peaceful and lawful rally, the center was placed on lockdown and detainees’ families were denied visitationRead Yolanda’s report-back (en Español aquí), and please consider attending the next rally (date to be determined) to help fight this blatant injustice.  Read more here about visibility for immigrants in detention at this and other for-profit facilities in the Trump era.

OUR VOICES IN THE PRESS:  Congressman Paul Cook took to the pages of the press last week to connect “shouting down legislators in town halls” with “setting the stage” for the Republican baseball-practice shooting.  IMB member Eric M. responds with an open letter in the Hi-Desert Star; add your comment!  Letters to the Editor are an important platform for our voices!  Find the resources for writing your own on the IMB Use the Press page.

Weekly Call to Action – Week of June 18, 2017

La última Alerta de Acción será publicada tan pronto como esté disponible; por favor, regrese.

Update Thursday June 22, 2017:

IS THE HEALTHCARE DEBACLE MAKING YOU SICK?  Three things you can do to make it better:

  1. Bury the Senate bill in amendments:  submit your own!
  2. Learn how SB562 can bring single-payer to California at our community forum June 26.
  3. Register your fellow citizens to vote at the SB562 forum:  get trained this weekend!

#1:  SUBMIT AN AMENDMENT to Senators Feinstein and Harris and slow the TrumpCare action waaaay dowwwwnnnn….

One of the final stages of the TrumpCare bill is a little-known process known as “vote-a-rama” where ANY Senator can submit as many amendments as he or she wants. And here’s the thing: EVERY amendment takes time to be introduced and voted on.  Indivisible nationally is collecting THOUSANDS of amendments and submitting them directly to Senate staff.  Submit your amendments here, and get your friends and family members to submit amendments.  We know this is working already. Senators are reading these amendments on the Senate floor.  But we need thousands more.

This is about applying our constituent power directly to the process. This tactic can delay the bill and make it more politically painful for Republicans to move forward.  It’s not a silver bullet- McConnell and Senate Republicans can still blow up Senate rules and cut off the amendment process. But to do that they’ll have to go on the record literally silencing the victims of TrumpCare in their own states, which they really don’t want to visibly do.  So join the Amendment-O-Rama and put them in the spotlight!

#2:  A CALIFORNIA SOLUTION:  Attend our SB562 community forum on Monday June 26.

SB562, the Healthy California Act, is a plan for single payer, affordable, comprehensive healthcare for all Californians.  Come learn about it at the IMB SB562 Community Forum on June 26 in Yucca Valley.  Share the Facebook Event and invite your friends.  Find out more on our Health Care Issues page.  And view Stories from the Frontlines – local community members telling their stories in videos that support SB562.   View the latest, and consider submitting a video yourself!  It’s easy.  Click here to read and download our video making and submission guidelines.

#3:  HELP REGISTER VOTERS AT THE SB562 FORUM:  Get trained this weekend in just 20 minutes!

Registering new voters is the surest way to create change in America.  We need trained volunteers to help register voters at our Healthy California community forum on Monday June 26.  Training takes about 20 minutes and is available afternoons this weekend.  No special skills required.  Free.  Join our registration volunteers!  Contact  indivisible@indivisiblemb.org. Voter registration is a nonpartisan civic activity of Indivisible Morongo Basin.

ACTION CALLS:  FULL SPEED ON TRUMPCARE!  Call Senators Feinstein and Harris!

Let’s not waste any time: our work this week is what will win the TrumpCare fight.  Senate Republicans are planning to vote on their still-secret bill in the next two weeks.  We still don’t have text.  Or a CBO score.  And Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is too busy twisting arms and cutting deals with your Senators to meet with patient groups like the March of Dimes and the American Heart Association.  But none of that will matter in the end: if they get the votes, they’ll pass it in the dead of night, without any public input, and without knowing its full impact on your family.  McConnell will schedule this bill for a vote as soon as he secures enough support.  So if you wait until a vote is scheduled to act, you’ve waited too long.  It’s time to step up our constituent power game and win this thing.  Call Senators Feinstein and Harris daily and demand that they slow down Senate business by withholding consent on all regular Senate business, and prepare to filibuster by amendment until and unless there are public hearings on TrumpCare.  Sample scripts here.

DO-IT-YOURSELF ACTION:  The TrumpCare stealth maneuvers are only possible when hidden.  We can expose what’s going on using one of our most powerful tools:  the time-tested letter to the editor!  To make it easy, we have new resources on our “Use the Press” page.  There you will find links for submitting Letters To the Editors to local papers as well as newspapers throughout the 8th Congressional District.  Indivisible Morongo Basin also has a new LTE Mentor Team that will be happy to help you; just contact us hereWrite a letter today!

CALIFORNIA RESPONDS TO TRUMPCARE:  SB562, the Healthy California Act, is a plan for single payer, affordable, comprehensive healthcare for all Californians.  What you can do:

  • Attend the IMB SB562 Community Forum on June 26 in Yucca Valley.  Share the Facebook Event and invite your friends.  Find out more on our Health Care Issues page.
  • More Stories From the Frontlines:  Local community members are telling their stories in videos that support SB562, the Healthy California Act.  View the latest, and consider submitting a video yourself!  It’s easy.  Click here to read and download our video making and submission guidelines.

ACTION CALLS:  Obstruction of justice requires independent investigation and impeachment hearings!

On Thursday, former FBI Director James Comey (a Republican) confirmed under oath what many of us already suspected and what the press has reported—that Donald Trump asked him to drop the investigation into disgraced former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn. Let’s be clear about what this means: the President of the United States knew that the FBI was investigating his associates, tried to stop that investigation, and then fired the person who wouldn’t stop it. This is obstruction of justice, a federal crime, and an impeachable offense.  Impeachment won’t happen overnight—it will be a long-term fight, and we start pushing NOW.   Call Rep. Cook and Senators Feinstein and Harris and demand both an independent commission AND impeachment hearings. Sample scripts here.

STORIES FROM THE FRONTLINES:  Local community members are invited to make videos that support SB562, the Healthy California Act, and tell their stories.  Please consider submitting a video. It’s easy. Click here to read and download our video making and submission guidelines.

DEFEND OUR MONUMENTS:  Monuments for All Rallies in Barstow and Indio.  In April President Trump signed an executive order ordering review of newly designated national monuments, directly attacking two California desert national monuments:  Sand to Snow and Mojave Trails.  In response, Mojave Desert Land Trust will hold back-to-back rallies on opposite ends of the desert. Action Alert #1

THIS IS IT:  Our monthly Action Meeting is tomorrow, Tuesday!  Register here.

ACTION CALL:  Oppose the #WrongCHOICEAct!

The House is scheduled to vote this week on the so-called “Financial CHOICE Act (H.R. 10), cutting the protections put in place the last time Wall Street gambled away our savings, homes and jobs. This bill would dismantle the 2010 Wall Street reform legislation, known as the Dodd-Frank Act.  Dodd-Frank created the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, an agency committed to protecting consumers and making sure that banks, lenders, and other financial institutions treat you fairly.  Dodd-Frank imposes important rules to rein in the kind of Wall Street speculation that crashed the economy.  It also seeks to rewrite the Shareholder Proposal Rule, taking away crucial rights of shareholders to hold companies accountable for risky behavior that harms consumers, workers and the environment. Call Rep. Paul Cook  and tell him you oppose the Financial CHOICE Act!  Sample call script here.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:  Indivisible Morongo Basin is pleased to announce that this and future Action Alerts will be available in Spanish on a special Spanish-language version of our Act Now page.  Thank you Yolanda for translating!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:  Citizenship Clinic in Desert Hot Springs

VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED for Saturday, June 10, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the citizenship clinic being hosted by COFEM in Desert Hot Springs.

They have a few stations at the event, like sign-in, prescreening, assistance with naturalization application, assistance with fee waiver and the final review application station. They mainly need help with the naturalization application because it takes the most time.

If anyone is interested, please contact Yolanda via email at yolanda@indivisiblemb.org. If there’s enough interest, a representative from COFEM is willing to come up to the high desert and train volunteers. Even if you only have a couple of hours, please consider volunteering. If you know of someone who may be interested, feel free to pass this request. Thanks!

FIRST:  CELEBRATE!   Cathedral City is now the first official Sanctuary City in the desert!  Congratulations and thanks to our sister group Courageous Resistance Palm Springs and Other Desert Cities and the many others who worked on this.  Find out more.

ACTION CALL:  Reaffirm the Paris Climate Agreement!

The New York Times reports that Trump may decide this week whether to pull out of the Paris Climate Agreement. The agreement is the first comprehensive deal aimed at reducing greenhouse gasses.  Six world leaders including France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed their commitment to the Paris Agreement as well as 188 additional countries. Trump is isolated over the Paris Climate Change deal.

The idea of the United States withdrawing from the Agreement is of global concern and we face economic arguments from world leaders. It is crucial to maintain a strong position for our country and for American businesses in many arenas internationally. Cooperation on climate matters to cooperation on trade and security. Trump campaigned on a promise to make better deals with other countries, from trade agreements to alliances to fight terrorism. Withdrawing from the Paris Agreement would send a clear message that America is an unreliable partner that fails to live up to its commitments. It will also handicap the competitiveness of American businesses in clean energy—a $1.3 trillion yearly global market. And it will worsen climate change!

The Paris Climate Agreement is supported by members of Trump’s own White House staff and there is mounting pressure from a diverse and large number of industries to remain in the accord. It is a driver of jobs and economic growth and a promise for a better future.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:  Call the White House comment line (202-456-1111) and be sure to tell the operator you are leaving a message for President Trump.

Tell him you fully support our reaffirmation to the Paris Climate Agreement. Ask him to please align with the G-7 nations and listen to the millions of people all over the world who support America’s role in the agreement. Pulling out of the agreement would have serious consequences for our relationships with other countries. Tell him the agreement is a driver of jobs and economic growth and a promise for a better future.  IMPORTANT:  Make this call on TUESDAY, as Monday offices will be closed.

VETERANS:  Ask Rep. Paul Cook’s staff about his actions versus his promises!

Staff from Rep. Paul Cook’s office are scheduled to be in attendance at the 4th Annual Veterans Resource Fair in Apple Valley on June 1, from 10 am to 1:30 pm.  Congressman Cook seems to have a lot more interest in veterans than in his other constituents, so we ask our members who are vets to hold Cook accountable for actions that affect not just vets but ALL Americans.  Ask his staff to explain his record, including his vote on Trumpcare, and why he is not demanding an independent commission to investigate ties between the Trump Administration and Russia.  Apple Valley Conference Center, 14975 Dale Evans Road, Apple Valley.  More information hereWant to carpool?  Contact indivisible@indivisiblemb.org.

MARCH FOR TRUTH:  National Day of Action on Saturday, June 3

Join thousands across the nation to restore faith in American government, calling for an impartial investigation into Russian interference in the US election and ties to Donald Trump, his administration, and his associates.  Note that there will NOT be a March for Truth locally, but you are encouraged to join:

PROTECT IMMIGRANTS:  Help make Cathedral City an official Sanctuary City and start a desert wave!

UPDATE:  PLEASE WEAR WHITE TO THE COUNCIL HEARING.

Cathedral City is voting May 24 on whether to become a Sanctuary City – the first official Sanctuary City in the desert!  This landmark move could start a wave, and there are two ways you can help it happen:

  1. Show up AND WEAR WHITE:  Attend the vote on May 24 at the City Council Meeting in Cathedral City!  Support Sanctuary and support this important effort by our sister group Courageous Resistance Palm Springs and Other Desert Cities.  Wear white and be counted!  Study Session and Regular Meeting 4:30 to 11 pm in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 68700 Avenida Lalo Guerrero, Cathedral City.  If interested in carpooling contact indivisible@indivisiblemb.org.
  2. Speak up:  The City is receiving blowback from the opposition, so let’s make sure our support is heard loud and clear!  Send an email today to City Clerk Tracey Martinez TMartinez@cathedralcity.gov and voice your opinion to support this vote.  Sanctuary Cities are possible safe spaces for our undocumented neighbors who contribute in so many ways to our communities.

DEFEND THE ACA IN THE SENATE:  Tell our Senators to stand strong!

TrumpCare is hitting the Senate, and since Republicans only have a bare Senate majority, this is where our active opposition to TrumpCare has its greatest prospects for success.  We must focus like a laser beam on the biggest stakes of that debate, of which at least five concerns will arise that deserve highest-priority advocacy:

  • Protecting the safety-net Medicaid program
  • Ensuring health coverage is affordable
  • Protecting people with pre-existing health conditions
  • Guaranteeing meaningful coverage
  • Funding Planned Parenthood

Call Senators Feinstein and Harris and tell them to stand strong in supporting our healthcare!

LOCAL HEALTHCARE UPDATE:  IMB members traveled to Sacramento on Friday for Healthy California Lobby Day.  They visited our representatives and turned in petitions in support of SB 562, collected by our members. California is leading the way on sane healthcare for all!  THANK YOU to those who went and those who are collecting signatures!

SAVE THE DATE:  Planning has started for a rally in Yucca Valley on Saturday June 3 as part of the national March for Truth to restore faith in American government, calling for an impartial investigation into Russian interference in the US election and ties to Donald Trump, his administration, and his associates.  Stay tuned for details!

Action Alert #2

FIRST:  Take a moment to CELEBRATE the appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate the Russia-Trump ties and know that YOU had a part in this important development!  We ARE making a difference!

OUR MOJAVE MONUMENTS:  Your comment will count!

On April 26, 2017, President Trump signed an executive order instructing the Department of the Interior (DOI) to review the designation of national monuments under the Antiquities Act. This action directly attacks two California desert national monuments designated in 2016: Sand to Snow and Mojave Trails.

The Department of the Interior has announced a public comment period to see whether the public supports our national monuments.  The Mojave Desert Land Trust has designed a way to make it easy to let the DOI know we support Sand to Snow and Mojave Trails National Monuments and why they are important to us.

Here’s what you do:  Go to www.mdlt.org/desert-defenders and provide your comments. It is a simple on-line form for your name, your email and your comments. They provide an example comment, or you can craft your own. PROTECT IMMIGRANTS:  Help make Cathedral City an official Sanctuary City!

Cathedral City is voting May 24 on whether to become a Sanctuary City – the first official Sanctuary City in the Coachella Valley!  There are two ways you can help this happen:

  1. Speak up:  The City is currently taking email comments from residents and residents from surrounding areas who either support or oppose the vote to become a sanctuary city.  They are hearing from the opposition – including on talk radio –  so let’s make sure our support is heard loud and clear!  Send an email today to City Clerk Tracey Martinez TMartinez@cathedralcity.gov and voice your opinion to support this vote.  Sanctuary Cities are possible safe spaces for our undocumented neighbors who contribute in so many ways to our communities.
  2. Show up:  Attend the vote on May 24 at the City Council Meeting in Cathedral City!  Support Sanctuary and support this important effort by our sister group Courageous Resistance Palm Springs and Other Desert Cities. Study Session and Regular Meeting 4:30 to 11 pm in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 68700 Avenida Lalo Guerrero, Cathedral City.  If interested in carpooling contact indivisible@indivisiblemb.org.

CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS:  What we do now

The crisis since the firing of FBI Director James Comey is deepening every day, increasing the danger to our most basic democratic institutions and values.  In response, the Democrats in the Senate are showing some will to take action.  Our job now is to make sure they stand up and stand firm.

Call Senator Feinstein and Senator Harris and ask them to do two things:

  1. Demand a special prosecutor appointed by the Department of Justice.  Senator Feinstein, from her important position on the Senate Judiciary Committee, has called for Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to appoint such a special prosecutor or resign his post.  Ask Senator Feinstein to stand firm in this demand!  See here why a DoJ-appointed prosecutor is the best choice.
  2. Slow the Senate to a crawl until we get a special prosecutor. Congress should not be conducting business as usual when our democracy is under direct threat, and every member of the Senate has the power to “withhold consent”.  Demand that Senators Feinstein and Harris object on every motion and filibuster every piece of legislation until a special prosecutor is appointed by the DoJ!

Action Alert #2

TWO ACTION CALLS TODAY:  Stand by the Paris Climate agreement, and demand outside, independent commission to investigate Trump-Russia ties!

ACTION CALL #1:  Stand by the Paris Climate agreement!

The Washington Post and the New York Times are reporting that President Trump is now leaning toward pulling the United States out of the Paris Climate Agreement, and this could happen any day.

EPA administrator, Scott Pruitt, said that the U.S. should exit the Paris Climate Agreement. He states that “It’s a bad deal for America. “

The U.S. has an important role in upholding its commitment to this landmark international agreement on climate change.  Withdrawing from the Paris Climate agreement will have disastrous consequences for our country and the planet. It would also have serious consequences for our relationships with other countries.

TODAY’S SCRIPT:  Call the director of the EPA, Scott Pruitt, and ask him to reconsider his disastrous decision to exit the Paris Climate Agreement. Remind him of his duty to PROTECT the environment and listen to the millions of people all over the world who support America’s role in the agreement. Tell him we made this agreement to protect our planet and that all generations to come are depending on the U.S. to stand by our position and to uphold our agreement.

TODAY’S PHONE NUMBER:  Scott Pruitt (EPA administrator) 202-564-4700

ACTION CALL #2:   Demand outside, independent commission to investigate Trump-Russia ties!

The rule of law is fundamental to our democracy.  In the wake of FBI Director Comey’s firing, a full and independent investigation must be carried out on the ties between President Trump and his affiliates, and President Putin and Russia.  Call Rep. Cook and Senators Feinstein and Harris; sample scripts below.  More information here.

Call Senators Feinstein and Harris (sample script):   In the wake of the firing of FBI Director Comey by President Trump, I am deeply concerned for the integrity of our electoral system and the rule of law, both of which are fundamental to our democracy.  I ask that the Senator commit to stopping all Senate business and blocking any judicial and Department of Justice nominees until an independent law enforcement investigator is appointed.

Call Congressman Cook (sample script)In the wake of the firing of FBI Director Comey by President Trump, I am deeply concerned for the integrity of our electoral system and the rule of law, both of which are fundamental to our democracy.  Therefore, I am calling to ask Rep. Cook to support H.R. 356, the bipartisan Protecting Our Democracy Act to create an outside, independent commission to investigate the Trump-Russia connection.   If the President has nothing to hide, then he should welcome the creation of a commission providing an independent investigation to remove all doubt of a coverup.

Action Alert #1

TRUMPCARE:   What do we do now?

Hiding until the last moment, in the end Rep. Paul Cook ignored the concerns of his constituents and his own pretense that he would protect citizens with preexisting conditions and voted for TrumpCare and repealing the ACA – despite having previously acknowledged that this would result in the deaths of Americans.  We deserve to have him justify that vote to us.

What do we do now?  To start:

  • Call Rep. Cook and ask him how he can possibly defend taking away protections from people with pre-existing conditions, or ripping health care away from more than 24 million people.  Sample scripts here.
  • Write a letter to the editor of the local newspaper and other papers throughout Congressional District 8.  Find contacts here.
  • Rep. Cook sent out his “Legislative Update” by mail this weekend.  It includes a Constituent Survey.   Be sure to fill it out and mail it back, and feel free to alter the list of “Top Concerns” to reflect your own!

MONDAY MAY 8:  “When our Mojave Monuments are under attack, we fight back!”

President Trump has signed an Executive Order putting our national monuments in unprecedented danger, including our desert monuments.  The Mojave Desert Land Trust is sponsoring a Mojave Monuments Rally at their headquarters in Joshua Tree.  There will be information about the three Mojave Monuments, letters to elected officials for guests to sign, and a Q&A session led by local experts about the threats to our public lands and what you can do to defend them.  “Let’s keep our public lands in public hands.  Monuments for all!  #desertdefenders”   5:30-7:30 pm.  MDLT headquarters, 60124 – 29 Palms Hwy, Joshua Tree.  Free.  MDLT.org.   RSVP.  Facebook event page here.

ACTION CALL:  DO.  NOT.  WAIT.  CALL COOK NOW, TELL HIM TO VOTE NO ON TRUMPCARE 3.0!  Tell him you will hold him accountable for what happens to his constituents with preexisting conditions.  Sample script.  Can’t get through?  Bury his offices in faxes overnight:  DC fax 202-225-6498. Apple Valley fax (760) 247-8073. Yucaipa fax 909-797-4997.  And comment on his Facebook pageDon’t take no – or silence – or full mailboxes – for an answer.

BE THERE:  Stop the Wall Rally in Yucca Valley THIS FRIDAY, May 5, 5-6 pm

At a time when our President is talking about building a border wall, people of the Morongo Basin will build a different kind of wall – a wall of support for our immigrant brothers and sisters from all over the world, standing shoulder to shoulder in solidarity.

Our numbers will show the strength of our opposition to Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda – stand up and be counted!  Please come, bring your friends, spread the word.  Share our video and our Facebook Event pagePrint and post the flyer

A border wall between the US and Mexico would be a manifestation of hatred and fear, as well as a colossal waste of time, treasure, and effort. We at Indivisible Morongo Basin choose to build support, tolerance, and acceptance of all immigrants: No Bans, No Walls, No Raids!

Stand shoulder to shoulder with us on May 5, 2017 from 5 to 6 pm, at Route 62 and Old Woman Springs Road in Yucca Valley, CA.

Action Alert #1

ACTION CALL:   It’s time for Paul Cook to take a stand, save the ACA, and stop TrumpCare.  That means it’s up to US.

Our congressman Paul Cook has been identified by the national Indivisible Team as one of the 51 target representatives who must be moved to oppose TrumpCare.  He still won’t say how he’ll vote.

Last week, congressional Republicans tried one more time to ram their disastrous TrumpCare bill through the House. Once again they failed.  But they’re not done trying—and this week, they’re getting dangerously close.

They’re pulling out all the stops to round up the votes they need to pass TrumpCare and rip health care away from 24 million people. They know that they need to repeal the ACA so that they can fund the rest of the Trump agenda.

Donald Trump and Paul Ryan are just a few votes short of what they need to pass TrumpCare in the House. The House Rules Committee is meeting today, and they’ve been hard at work all weekend trying to round up their votes. They’re very close, but they don’t have them yet.  But people like us have been working hard, too, and it’s having an enormous impact.

We need to make this week count:  Call Rep. Paul Cook, every office, every day, and make sure he knows that you’ll be holding him accountable.

By now, Republicans should have learned their lesson:  Americans do not want this bill.  It’s time to shut TrumpCare down for good.

FRIDAY:  Stop the Wall Rally in Yucca Valley.  Event page here.  Please share!  Print flyer

Action Alert #3

CALL NOW:  We have 48 hours to defeat TrumpCare . . . again.  It all depends on US.

This is not a drill. After Trump and House Republicans were able to strike a deal with the far-right Freedom Caucus to make TrumpCare even worse, the fate of health care for 24 million people rests on 51 “moderate” Republicans. One of them is Rep. Paul Cook.

Killing TrumpCare once and for all depends on the next 24–48 hours and our constituent power. It depends on us calling to make sure that when this bill comes to the floor later this week, Congressman Cook knows that the only acceptable vote on this dumpster fire of a bill is a firm NO.

There is only one question he needs to answer: Will he stand with his constituents or will he stand with Donald Trump?

At this very moment, Republicans are rallying votes for TrumpCare 2.0. But they’re nervous after the defeat of TrumpCare the first time around, and that gives us power.  Our phone calls to Rep. Cook are vital to making sure TrumpCare ends up where it belongs: the trash.

Call Rep. Cook and tell him to not waste any more time on TrumpCare Demand that he work for us and not for Trump or Ryan.

We won once. We will win again.

HANG ONTO YOUR HATS, PEOPLE:  IT’S GOING TO BE A BUSY WEEK!  LOTS OF OPPORTUNITY TO RESIST THE TRUMP AGENDA!

ACTION CALLS:  Tell Rep. Cook and our Senators to oppose the dismantling of our national monuments!

President Trump is launching a devastating new attack on our public lands — this time targeting national monuments.  These monuments include more than 1 billion acres of America’s most cherished natural and cultural wonders, but Trump would rather see them industrialized for corporate profit.  Tomorrow, Trump is expected to issue an executive order to the Department of the Interior to review the designation of every monument that’s been protected since 1996.  His goal?  To turn these magnificent places over to special interests like coal and logging.  More than 50 national monuments are now at risk, from Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears national monuments in Utah to vast marine areas in the Pacific and Caribbean.  But Trump’s scheme can’t succeed without support in Congress.  That’s why we need you to speak up now:  Call Rep. Paul Cook and Senators Feinstein and Harris, tell them you treasure our national monuments, and urge them to fight any effort to dismantle these iconic public lands.

Action Alert #1

ACTION CALL:  Don’t risk a shut-down:  Tell Rep. Cook to oppose budget “poison pills”!

Now that Congress is back in Washington they have to pass a stopgap funding bill, known as a “CR” (Continuing Resolution), to fund the government past April 28.  But with his 100-day report card looming on that same day, Trump is desperate for any legislative win he can get—so much so that his cronies in Congress may be willing to risk a government shutdown by including unpopular policy riders in the funding bill, such as:

  • Defunding of ACA cost-sharing subsidies (CSRs) that millions of Americans rely on to keep coverage affordable
  • Defunding Planned Parenthood and other family planning initiatives
  • Additional funding for Trump’s mass deportation force, including his border wall, detention facilities, and more ICE agents
  • Restricting federal funding for cities that take up sanctuary policies
  • Defunding the EPA and other climate protection programs

Rep. Paul Cook in the past has supported such “poison pill” policy riders, but has also gone on record opposing government shutdown and co-sponsored a bill that would prohibit members of the House or Senate from receiving a paycheck if their respective chamber fails to pass a budget.  Call and tell Congressman Cook not to risk a shutdown and to oppose any of these policy riders in any funding bill.

COMING UP:

ACTION CALL AND POSTCARD:  Do Not Support the Cadiz Water Export Project!

The Indivisible MB Environmental Issues Team is taking focused action on the Cadiz Water Project this month.  Support this action with calls and postcards to your congressman and senators!  Sample scripts below and on Environment issues page.

Cadiz Inc, located in Cadiz, San Bernardino County, is a private company that plans to exploit a natural desert aquifer and destroy pristine public lands for profit.

Cadiz plans to pump ancient groundwater from below the Mojave Desert and sell it to urban areas in Southern California, transporting it in a 43-mile pipeline.

This project would potentially draw down the Mojave Desert aquifer, which could in turn open the area up to increased environmental risks. The National Park Service and US Geological Survey argue that Cadiz would withdraw more water – 50,000 acre feet for year – than nature will be able to recharge the desert aquifer.

The new Administration has put Cadiz on a list of priority infrastructure and has quietly pushed the Federal Bureau of Land Management to rescind an earlier directive that required Cadiz to obtain a federal right of way permit, which would include comprehensive environmental review before being allowed to proceed to build the pipeline.

This project puts corporate profits ahead of the public’s interest.

EPA Action/Tax Rally/Town Hall

ACTION CALL AND POSTCARD:  Defend the Environmental Protection Agency

Any attempt to eliminate the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), or slash its budget, would irreparably harm our health and communities.  We depend on the EPA to protect our air, water and climate from harm.  Without proper resources they will have difficulty enforcing basic rules to protect our communities, which include…

  • Monitoring air quality in our communities
  • Ensuring our water is safe to drink
  • Enforcing protections from industrial discharge of toxic water pollution
  • Protecting our air from increased emissions of mercury, arsenic, lead, soot, and the pollution that causes smog
  • Cracking down on toxic pesticides that are wiping out our pollinating bees and threaten our food supply
  • Holding corporate polluters accountable
  • The Clean Power Plan, which limits climate-change-causing emissions and carbon pollution
  • Protection of our cherished public lands

The EPA is an essential part of our government that was founded with bipartisan support and remains popular across the country.

Oppose any action that undermines the EPA’s ability to protect the public health.  Defend our planet and communities!  We need a fully funded EPA to defend the health and safety of the American people.

Stand behind the EPA and find it intolerable to cut the EPA budget!

UPDATE: Feinstein announces here opposition to the Gorsuch nomination! Call her to thank her.

It’s D-Day for Dianne:  Tell Senator Feinstein “No Gorsuch, No Way!”

The confirmation vote for Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch is this week, but Senator Dianne Feinstein is still on the fence.  She needs to get knocked off that fence and commit to a filibuster by hearing from YOU, her constituents.  Senator Feinstein likes to play it safe, and it will take an overwhelming deluge of calls to move her.  So the diet this week is one dish and one dish only:  Feinstein Filibuster, breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Call her at all her offices, email her, fax her, comment on her Facebook page – reach her however you can, but don’t let up.  And spread the word!  It’s bombs-away on D-Day for DiFi:  No Gorsuch, No Way!  And don’t forget to tell Senator Harris that her own commitment to filibuster has your support.

Fax numbers for Senator Feinstein:   Washington, D.C., (202) 228-3954; San Diego (619) 231-1108; San Francisco (415) 393-0710; Los Angeles (310) 914-7318.

Clear your calendars:  April Recess is going to be Big!

From the Indivisible Town Hall in Victorville to national days of action on Trump tax returns, science, and the climate, April will demand resistance from all of us.  Come to the Indivisible Morongo Basin Action Meeting on Tuesday, April 4, and help plan the fun; it’s going to be a beautiful spring!  Register here.

Question:  When is a town hall not a town hall?  Answer:  When it’s a last-minute tin-eared “tele-townhall”!

Rep. Cook held a telephonic “town hall”, with very short – one day – notice, on March 29th.  Calls were screened and, intentionally or not, most of the ones that he heard during the call were complimentary of him and supportive of his positions and when not, the answers he gave were imprecise, un-focused and provided little substance.

During this call the representative heard virtually no dissenting views on the grave and critical issues that confront his constituents, the country and the world, among them questions as to 1) why Mr. Cook votes in virtually 100% lock-step with the Trump agenda, 2) his position on corruption and conflicts of interest in the Trump administration, 3) if he has concerns as to Russian manipulation of the 2016 election, particularly the potential involvement of Trump’s campaign personnel and possibly Trump himself, 4) his position on the gutting of environmental regulations and the Trump administration’s de-funding of climate science (not to mention their denial that there is even a problem), and 5) his position on the intent to de-fund Planned Parenthood which is essential to women’s health care, to name a just a few.

If Rep. Cook’s intent is to have this tele-conference stand in lieu of face-to-face meetings with his constituents and hearing their concerns then this call was an inadequate substitute for that.  The congressman has an opportunity to participate in such an exchange at the Victorville town hall he has been invited to on April 22.  Will he take this opportunity to hear something other than what was frankly a much too limited dialog allowed during the tele-conference?

Week of March 26, 2017

SPECIAL ALERT:  REP. COOK “TELE-TOWNHALL” WEDNESDAY MARCH 29

With one day’s notice, Congressman Cook has announced a “tele-townhall”.  A last-minute screened tele-call is no substitute for an in-person town hall. Get on the call and ask Rep. Cook why he won’t schedule a face-to-face event with his constituents.  Wednesday March 29, 6:30 p.m.  Dial 877-229-8493, PIN Access 116529.  And add a comment to his Facebook post.

Action Alert #1

CALL CONGRESSMAN COOK AND TELL HIM TO DEMAND AN INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATION INTO TRUMP-RUSSIA TIES AND RELEASE OF TRUMP’S TAX RETURNS!

Rep. Paul Cook must take a public stand and call for an independent commission to investigate Trump-Russia ties and possible collusion.  Devin Nunes’ actions last Wednesday demonstrate that the House Intelligence Committee cannot oversee an impartial investigation.  Collusion and meddling in our presidential elections is not a partisan issue, and now is the time for Rep. Cook to show he puts country before party and publicly call for an independent investigation.   As a career officer in the Marine Corps, Rep. Paul Cook vowed to protect his nation from hostile foreign powers; is he still willing to fight?

Further, to get to the bottom of any Trump-Russia ties, Rep. Cook must demand that Trump release his tax returns.  Urge him to cosponsor Rep. Bill Pascrell’s Resolution of Inquiry (H.Res. 186), directing the Treasury Secretary to provide the House of Representatives with Trump’s tax returns from 2006 through 2015.  See a sample script here.

Call Rep. Cook and tell him to:

  • demand an independent investigation into Trump-Russia ties
  • cosponsor HR 186

Then write a letter to the editor and comment on Cook’s Facebook page!

CALL SENATORS FEINSTEIN & HARRIS AND TELL THEM TO POSTPONE THE GORSUCH HEARINGS AND FILIBUSTER HIS NOMINATION!

With the possibility of collusion with a foreign government hanging over the Trump presidency, the last thing the Senate should be doing is considering a lifetime nomination to the Supreme Court. Call Senator Feinstein and Senator Harris every day and insist that they publicly demand the postponement of the Gorsuch hearings until an independent, bipartisan investigation is completed into Trump-Russia ties and possible collusion. Further, tell Senators Feinstein and Harris that you expect them to filibuster any vote on Gorsuch because he is seeking a stolen Supreme Court seat, and his extreme views are out of step with the American people.  Let them know that #WeObject.  Find more background information here.

DIG IN, PEOPLE:  Today is the LAST CHANCE to push Rep. Paul Cook on TrumpCare!

Tomorrow (Thursday) Paul Cook will vote on repealing the Affordable Care Act and replacing it with TrumpCare.  Republicans in Congress are nervous, and let’s make sure Rep. Cook is feeling nervous, too!  CALL TODAY and tell him he must oppose TrumpCare and the repeal of the ACA.  In his newsletter this week – where he spends NINE paragraphs complaining about President Obama and the ACA and ONLY ONE vague paragraph on TrumpCare – he says he hopes to hear from constituents on the effects of the Republican proposal.  So grant his wish and tell him what you think!  Call all three of his offices TODAY, then leave a comment on his Facebook page and encourage your friends to give him their opinion, too!  TODAY!  See sample script here.

Action Alert #1 – ACTION CALLS:
#1 CALL THE HOUSE:  This is it:  Three calls.  Three offices.  Three days.

This is the week:  It’s do-or-die for the ACA.  The Republicans in Congress are determined to repeal the ACA and pass TrumpCare this Thursday.   Your job:  Call all three Cook offices, every day this week.  Then, get others to call, as well.

This week is one of a handful this year that will decide the fate of the Affordable Care Act. This THURSDAY, exactly seven years after the ACA became law, the House of Representatives will be voting to repeal it and replace it with TrumpCare—a plan that, if passed, will lead to at least 24 million Americans losing their health care.  TrumpCare would un-do the gains brought to the 8th District by the ACA, which has extended Medicaid expansion coverage to 85,600 low-income residents and brought the uninsured rate down by 11.2%.  Don’t let it happen!   Call Rep. Cook and tell him to OPPOSE the ACA repeal and this TrumpCare replacement!  Sample script here.   Then get others involved—empower friends, family members, neighbors, or colleagues.  Share on social media, tag a friend on Facebook, or just tell someone else why you get involved.

#2 CALL THE SENATE:  Oppose Supreme Court Nominee Neil Gorsuch

On Monday, March 20, Judge Neil Gorsuch will have his first hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee as nominee to the United State Supreme Court.  Judge Gorsuch does not belong on the Supreme Court—and not just because Republicans stole this seat by refusing to hold a hearing (let alone a vote!) for Merrick Garland, President Obama’s supremely well qualified and moderate nominee.  Judge Gorsuch is a staunch conservative out of step with the American people.  Gorsuch’s extreme record on everything from women’s rights to civil rights to corporate power is simply unacceptable.  Call Senators Feinstein and Harris and tell them you expect them to use every tool—including a possible filibuster—to keep Gorsuch off of the highest court.  You can use this sample script.   And find more resources here.

Action Alert #2 – ACTION CALLS:

#1:   In the Senate: The Most Boring and Dangerous Bills You’ve Never Heard Of

The SCRUB Act:  Yes, even congressional staffers eyes glaze over at the mention of “regulatory rollback.”  You know who doesn’t think this is boring?  Corporate lobbyists—and they’re hoping you don’t notice. The Searching for and Cutting Regulations that are Unnecessarily Burdensome (SCRUB) Act (H.R. 998) would create an unelected board to make recommendations to Congress on cutting regulations.  This may not sound like a big deal—but it is.  It’s a quiet way to give big business a big gift: the end of regulations essential to protecting our environment, health, and workplace safety.  This bill has already passed the House and is currently before the Senate.  Senators Feinstein and Harris have not yet issued statements on this bill. Call and tell them to vote NO on the SCRUB Act! Sample script here.

The REINS Act:  As if that weren’t bad enough, the Senate is also considering the Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny (REINS) Act (S. 21), which requires congressional approval for a huge number of regulations.  This bill would put corporate lobbyists in the driver’s seat—taking aim at the health and safety protections Americans depend on.  REINS is a truly reactionary, fundamental reworking of the federal government, and not in a fun way. It’s been called “the most dangerous bill you’ve never heard of.”  Senators Feinstein and Harris have not yet issued statements on this bill, either.  Call and tell them to vote NO on the REINS Act!  Sample script here.  More details on the bill here.

#2:  Paul Cook:  You read the bill, you got the numbers – WHERE DO YOU STAND?

The CBO has released its report on “TrumpCare”, and the numbers are stunning.  TrumpCare will throw 14 million people off their existing insurance plans by 2018 and 24 million by 2026, cut Medicaid by $880 billion over 10 years, and increase premiums by 15-20% for those who are allowed to keep their plans.  Will Rep. Paul Cook stand up for our healthcare?   Let’s get him on the record!   He says he’s “read the bill,” and now he has the data from the CBO to inform his decision.  This is particularly pressing in the 8th District, where Medicaid expansion extended coverage to 85,600 low-income residents, and where the uninsured rate has fallen by 11.2%.  Call Rep. Cook, ask him where he stands on TrumpCare, and tell him why YOU oppose ACA repeal and this TrumpCare replacement!  Sample script here.

Action Alert #1

#1:   Where does Cook stand on TrumpCare?  “TrumpCare” and the repeal of the ACA have passed out of committee and are hurtling toward passage in the House, despite no scoring from the CBO .  Will Rep. Paul Cook stand up for our healthcare?   Let’s get him on the record!  Last week he received hundreds of comments from constituents on his Facebook page, plus phone calls from across the District, urging him not to repeal the ACA.  He says he’s “read the bill”, so he should know by now what we all know:  TrumpCare would take healthcare away from millions and weaken Medicare.  Call and ask him where he stands!  Tell him why YOU are opposed to TrumpCare.  And be prepared to follow up when we get that CBO score!

#2:  Stop the secrecy around Trump’s taxes.  We’re all still being kept in the dark about Trump’s conflicts of interest—including information that could be important to revealing further ties between Trump and Russia. Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-NJ) has introduced a Resolution of Inquiry (H.Res. 186) directing the Treasury Secretary to provide to the House of Representatives Trump’s tax returns from 2006 through 2015, as well as other financial documentation. If you think that Trump’s tax returns need to be made public, tell Rep. Paul Cook to cosponsor H.Res. 186Here’s background and a script for asking him to cosponsor the resolution.

Action Alert #2

ACTION CALLS:
#1: Appoint a special prosecutor. If Congressman Paul Cook is serious about Russian interference in our nation’s institutions, he will ask for a full, transparent investigation – and that means nothing less than the appointment of an independent special prosecutor. Bluster and softball hearings are not enough. Cook is co-chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, which will be holding a hearing early Thursday on “Undermining Democratic Institutions and Splintering NATO: Russian Disinformation Aims.” While professing his concern, Cook continues to try to deflect blame onto the Obama administration and stop short of a comprehensive investigation. Call Cook’s office and demand that he commit to supporting appointment of a special prosecutor for a full investigation into Russia’s meddling and ties with the White House!

#2: Stop the ACA repeal bill. Republicans are trying to move their repeal bill so quickly that the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) won’t have time to score the bill, meaning we won’t know how many people it will insure or how much it’s going to cost. It’s critical that this bill get slowed down. Ask Rep. Paul Cook to publicly demand a CBO score before Congress takes action and takes away health care from 32 million Americans. The message is simple: No Score, No Bill.

UPDATES:  See new blog posts on the IMB website:

ACTION CALLS:  (Note:  For our Alert this week we’ve adapted the actions advised by the national Indivisible Guide Team.)  From the anti-immigrant fear-mongering in Donald Trump’s joint address to Congress, to House Republicans’ move to allow Trump to continue hiding his tax returns, to the continuing flood of revelations about the administration’s communications with Russia, this has been a full and fast-moving week, and we’re not expecting things to slow down anytime soon. We’ll continue to share the most up-to-the-minute action items for your calls and visits to Congress through social media and in our scripts library, but you can’t go wrong this week focusing on two big issues:

Action Alert #1

BE THERE:  “Pray for Paul” Candlelight Vigil in Yucca Valley Tuesday Feb 28

Last week Paul Cook’s office issued a statement that referred to local voters making requests for a town hall as “fringe groups” and “agitators” who espouse “an extreme political agenda.”   A response is necessary.

The Great “Pray for Paul Candlelight Vigil” will happen locally on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at the NE corner of Hwy 62 and Old Woman Springs Road. It will be one hour long and will start at 4:45pm. Participants are asked to arrive at 4:30 for safety instructions and to set a peaceful intention. Please no actual candles. The Vigil organizers will have 130 LED tea candles available or bring your own. Bring your flowers, fringes, and signs! We ask that your signs stay ON MESSAGE. This is part of the “Paul Cook is Missing” campaign to bring public awareness to the fact that our congressman refuses to convene a town hall meeting.

Please also bring a peaceful mind and a commitment to peaceful action and communication.

Spread the word!

ACTION TWO:  A vote on Trump’s corruption. On Tuesday morning, the House Judiciary Committee will vote on a resolution requiring Attorney General Jeff Sessions to release documents related to corruption by Trump or his cronies, including ties to foreign governments. This is not a partisan issue; it’s about the integrity of the Oval Office and of our democracy. Yet, only 67 members of congress have co-sponsored. Call Paul Cook and ask him to co-sponsor H.Res. 111—see this script.

Join Indivisible Yucaipa in Resistance Recess events at Rep. Paul Cook’s Yucaipa office Feb 24-25

The newly formed Indivisible Yucaipa invites you to join them in their first visit to Paul Cook’s Yucaipa office on Friday, Feb 24 at 4 pm.   Then, on Saturday Feb 25 at 11 am they will hold a rally at the office to urge him to hold a town hall and to rally for healthcare.  Details here.

UPDATE:  Has Paul Cook been abducted by a cult??

“Congressman Cook’s office acknowledges disappearance,  investigators exploring possibility of cult abduction.”  Get all the updates at Where Is Paul Cook?.

The press has been intrigued by the campaign to find the congressman, including Rachel Maddow, CNN, and Mediaite, and the Press-Enterprise has a statement from Cook’s spokesman that includes the following:  “He will continue meeting with constituent groups just as he has in the past — including those which disagree with him, but do so in a constructive manner. Unfortunately, the main local agitators demanding a town hall seek not a dialogue but a platform to espouse an extreme political agenda that was resoundingly rejected in California’s 8th Congressional District, both in Rep. Cook’s reelection and in the presidential vote. He will not allow fringe groups of any type to dictate the political discourse.”

Action Alert #2

Is Rep. Paul Cook playing “hard to get”?  He spent last weekend at King of the Hammers, but we can’t even get a date – for a Town Hall!  Let’s build on our Valentine’s Day action and press our suit for his attention.

But first, a thank-you to everyone who contributed a Valentine’s card; over 100 cards were delivered yesterday to Cook’s office in Apple Valley!  We’ll have a report-back with video when it’s available.

Three possible actions you can take to increase the pressure on Cook for a Town Hall:

  • Comment on Cook’s Facebook page. A recent post highlights an event sending Valentine’s cards to our troops.  Leave a RESPECTFUL (or you might be blocked) comment on the post that we would love him to be OUR representative, too, and give us a date for a town hall.
  • Write a letter to the editor this week asking for a town hall. Note that, according to his own website, the Congressman’s last in-person town hall was in 2013.  Mention issues that are timely and concerning, such as Russian connections in the White House or the ACA, for which desert voters need direct answers from their representative.  Don’t limit yourself to Basin newspapers; you can find a list of links to papers throughout the 8th District here.
  • Keep calling! Called already?  Don’t let him off the hook – call again!  Try one of his other offices if you like, and turn on the charm!

Action Alert #1

This Valentine’s Day we’re letting Congressman Cook’s office know we want him to be ours – . our representative, that is. Working with other Indivisible groups in Rep. Cook’s district we’re delivering Valentine’s Day cards to the Cook’s field office at the Apple Valley Town Hall Building to demand that Congressman Cook schedule a town hall meeting with Q&A from his constituents.

What you need:
One or two Valentine’s Day cards. Make sure they include an envelope. On the inside of the card itself, where you would normally write your never-ending love for the recipient, let Congressman Cook know how disappointed you are that he’s NEVER had a town hall meeting and REFUSES to schedule one.
Then, on the outside of the envelope, address it as you would a real mail letter, but no stamp required. Put your return address in the top left corner, and, in the center, simply put Congressman Paul Cook.

What to do with it:
We’ll be arranging drop-off points for the cards before Tuesday. Stay tuned for updates and details.

Action Alert #2

For Friday, Feb 10:

Tell Congress to put national security over party politics:  NO BANNON ON THE NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL.

President Trump’s decision to remove the Director of National Intelligence and the Chairman of the Joints Chiefs of Staff (actual national security experts) from the National Security Council and instead give a permanent seat to Steve Bannon was an unprecedented politicization of what is supposed to be a nonpartisan body.

Call Congressman Paul Cook and ask him to cosponsor H.R.804 to prevent political appointees from serving on the NSC.  Rep. Cook is retired from a career in the US Marine Corps; ask him if he thinks Bannon is qualified to sit on that council and if Trump’s decision will make his constituents safer.

Call Senators Feinstein and Harris and ask them to cosponsor S.291 to modify the requirements for membership in the NSC.

Action Alert #1

ACTION ONE For Tuesday, Feb 7:  CALL FOR A COOK TOWN HALL
(Thanks for your effort on 2/7 – If you haven’t yet called, please do!)

When was the last time you saw Congressman Cook in person?  It’s time for him to answer to his constituents!

This Tuesday, we’re joining Indivisibles in San Bernardino Mountains, Victor Valley, and Barstow and calling Rep. Cook to request that he hold a town hall meeting in Victor Valley to discuss his positions in person and take questions from his constituents.  In order to make sure he gets the message, we’re calling all three of his offices:

  • Washington DC:  202-225-5861
  • Apple Valley:  760-247-1815
  • Yucaipa:  909-797-4900

Ask to speak with a senior staffer.  Get the staffer’s name and say something like this:  “Hi, I’m a constituent in the 8th District, and I’d like to know when Representative Cook’s next town hall meeting will be.”

If they don’t know, ask for them to let the congressman know you’d very much like them to schedule one in the Victor Valley ASAP, and you’d like to be notified as soon as they do.  Be sure to give them both your e-mail address and phone number.

If you get a recording, leave your name, home town, e-mail address, and phone number.  Explain that you’d like Rep. Cook to schedule a town hall meeting in the Victor Valley ASAP.  And tell them you’d like to be notified as soon as they do.

More information on the call for a Cook Town Hall here.

ACTION TWO:  DON’T LET THE SENATE RUBBER STAMP TRUMP’S UNFIT CABINET PICKS:  The Senate will try to confirm several of Trump’s Cabinet picks THIS WEEK.  A confirmation vote is scheduled for Betsy DeVos (Education), with additional votes possible for Jeff Sessions (Justice), Tom Price (Health and Human Services), and Steve Mnuchin (Treasury).  For reasons ranging from incompetence to well-documented racism, each is unfit to lead any of these agencies.  It’s not too late to stop them.  Keep calling our Senators’ offices to tell them to take every possible action to oppose these nominees!

Call your Senators and tell them exactly what they need to do to stop the Muslim and refugee ban.

Action Alert #1

There will be numerous critical votes on Trump’s Swamp Cabinet nominations this week. Call Senators Feinstein and Harris to express your opposition in particular to the nominations of Tillerson (State), Devos (Education), Sessions (Justice), Mnuchin (Treasury), Price (HHS), Puzder (Labor). It is unclear when various votes will take place (some will be as early as Monday 1/30) so our best course of action is to call the Senators NOW! See our quick contact guide on our Contact Congress page.

Call Senators and tell them they should withhold unanimous consent on any of these nominations, demanding 30 hours of debate.

Call Cook on regarding his stand on immigration.

Call Cook regarding Steve Bannon, his unprecedented appointment to the National Security Council, and dangerous instability in the White House.

House Bill 621 and House Bill 622 have been introduced which would (HR 621) “dispose” of millions of acres of public lands and sell them to private entities, and (HR 622) terminate law enforcement by the Forest Service and BLM on public lands. Call  Rep. Cook’s office, ask what his position on this is and express your strong opposition to these measures.

Action Alert #3 for week of January 22, 2017

Rep. Paul Cook has issued a statement in support of Trump’s action to permit the Keystone XL Pipeline.

Let him know that his constituents DO NOT SUPPORT THIS, and please help spread the word.

Action Alert #2 for week of January 22, 2017

National Day of Action

The founding Indivisible group calls for a National Day of Action, TODAY, on Tuesday, January 24.  We’ve adapted their alert below.  Contact Senators Feinstein and Harris and Rep. Paul Cook on our Contact Congress page. (Also, see our Quick Contact guide at the bottom of this message.)  Critical:  Tell Senator Feinstein to delay the Jeff Sessions vote THIS MORNING!

Three Indivisible Actions This Week

1) Keep the Heat on Trump’s Divisive Cabinet Nominees: Hearings for many of Trump’s cabinet nominees may have occurred last week, but the fight is far from over. Ethical scandals, financial conflicts, and outstanding questions plague many nominees. We’ve got to keep the heat on the disastrous nominees coming up this week:

Tuesday January 24th: The Senate Judiciary Committee will vote on Jeff Sessions, nominee for Attorney General. If confirmed, Sessions will be in charge of enforcing civil rights law and protections, despite having been rejected from a federal judgeship in 1986 after former colleagues testified about his history of racist remarks. Sessions has regularly opposed civil rights legislation and he has extreme anti-immigration views.

FEINSTEIN IS WAVERING.  CALL FEINSTEIN THIS MORNING AND URGE HER TO DELAY THE VOTE ON Jeff Sessions for Attorney General.

Tuesday, January 24th: Confirmation hearings continue for Rep. Tom Price to be Secretary of Health and Human Services. Rep. Price is a radical conservative who wants to destroy the Affordable Care Act, eviscerate anti-poverty efforts, and undermine women’s health, reproductive rights, and LGBTQ rights. There are also unanswered ethical questions about profits Price has made trading health care stocks during his time in Congress where he worked on health care legislation.

Urge your Senators to oppose the confirmation of Rep. Tom Price for HHS Secretary.

DELAYED! Trump’s controversial and unqualified nominee to be Secretary of Education, millionaire Betsy DeVos, was supposed to get a vote on Tuesday, the 24th. But in the wake of her poor performance in Congress last week and release of a report on her ethical conflicts, Committee Chairman Grassley has delayed that vote until January 31st.

Let’s delay this permanently! Urge Senators Feinstein and Harris to oppose the confirmation of Betsy DeVos for Education Secretary.

2) Tell Your Representative, “Vote No on HR 7, Yes for Women’s Healthcare”: You would think, in the wake of Saturday’s monumental Women’s March that Congress might show some respect for women’s rights. You’d be wrong. Instead, on Tuesday, January 24th, the House has scheduled a vote onHR 7. This unnecessary and intrusive legislation meddles with the private insurance marketplace and attacks women’s reproductive rights. It’s not the first time Republicans have tried to pass this anti-woman bill.

Call our Representative Paul Cook and tell him to vote No on HR 7.

3) Keep the Pressure On: Tell Congress to #ProtectOurCare. One of President Trump’s first acts in office was to sign an Executive Order that could threaten essential components of the Affordable Care Act. But to dismantle the ACA, Trump will need to get repeal legislation through Congress. Keep the pressure on our members of Congress! Tell Rep. Cook and Senators Harris and Feinstein that you won’t stand by and let 30+ million people lose their healthcare — and that you expect that they won’t either.

Action Alert #1 for week of January 22, 2011

Current efforts should be focused opposing Trump’s “Swamp Cabinet” nominees. Call your Senator’s office, particularly Sen. Feinstein, to register your opposition to the following nominees:

Jeff Sessions – DOJ
Rex Tillerson – State
Ben Carson – HUD
Betsy Devos – Education
Rick Perry – Energy
Steve Mnuchin – Treasury
Tom Price – HHS
Scott Pruitt – EPA
Sonny Perdue – Agriculture
Scripts to use when calling are here.

There will be nationwide activity on Tuesday the 24th to visit Republican and Democratic Senator’s offices. If you can’t visit a Senator’s office call them. If the phone is busy at a Senator’s DC office, call their field offices – find those numbers here.

Update: Call Rep. Cook. He should NOT vote for the Affordable Care Act repeal in the House:

It’s happening, people.  The first vote leading to repeal of Obamacare passed the Senate Wednesday night, and the House will be making its corresponding move any day now, perhaps Friday, with a budget resolution.  It’s time to fire that first shot across the bow and give Congressman Cook the news:  his constituents do NOT support repeal and we WILL be watching his vote!  Contact Cook today and tell him to vote against any legislation that will lead to repeal, including this budget resolution.  For helpful scripts on communicating about the ACA (Obamacare), see this page on the Indivisible Austin site.  For an understanding of where we are in the legislative process of the healthcare fight (this is just the beginning!), see this article on Vox – or this one, if you prefer cartoons!

Week of January 16, 2017:  ACTION #1

Resist Trump’s Corrupt Cabinet Appointments

“Republicans are trying to jam Donald’s racist, sexist, and corrupt cabinet nominees through the Senate confirmation process. Last week Congress tried to gut the ethics office, but they were forced to back down in response to thousands of constituent office visits and calls. This week they’re trying to ram through nominees who have not yet even completed an ethics review. To stop this, we need to make our voices heard again.  Click here to see the schedule for hearings this week — they start this morning. The fight starts in Committees, but your two senators will ultimately have a vote on each of these nominees….[L]et them know you’re watching whether they stand up to Trump.” (credit – email from IndivisibleAgainstTrump@gmail.com)

TIP:  When contacting our senators about Trump’s corrupt Cabinet appointments, make it easy with Sample Scripts from the folks at Indivisible Austin.  They have scripts specifically addressing Ross, Tillerson, Pompeo, Kelly, Sessions, Mattis, Chao, Devos, and Carson.  Clear, simple, and informative!

BONUS ACTION FOR DESERT FOLKS:  After you’ve urged your senators to defend healthcare, give Congressman Cook a call, as well!  Ask him how he intends to protect the healthcare of Basin citizens and where he stands on repeal of Obamacare and the protection of Medicare and Medicaid. Point out that “repeal and delay” is actually repeal and DENY. Remind him that he voted for repeal in 2015; ask him if he still holds that position. Let him know we’re watching!  Contact Cook at http://cook.house.gov/
